在市場經(jīng)濟（market economy）發(fā)達的美國，人們在很小的時候便開始接受商品經(jīng)濟觀念的熏陶。付出勞動便理所應當?shù)孬@得報酬，這在美國幾乎是一條連自家人也不例外的“金科玉律”。父母給孩子錢的初衷大多為：一是遵守按勞付酬的原則；二是讓孩子有一定的錢（allowance）購買他們必要的食品和學習用品；三是讓孩子得到一些勞動鍛煉。甚至連一些富豪教育子女時也是堅持“不勞動者不得食”（No pain no gain.）的觀點，迫使孩子從小摒棄“不勞而獲”的依賴感（dependance），樹立靠自己的雙手吃飯（earn their own living）的觀念。
