1. 表示“總共”，用來說明數(shù)量 (可放在數(shù)字之前、句首或句末)。如：
總共10人。
正：There are altogether ten people.
正：There are ten people altogether.
正：Altogether there are ten people.
2. 表示“完全”，可以修飾動詞、形容詞、副詞、介詞短語等。如：
I forget it altogether. 我全忘了。
The thing is not altogetherimpossible. 這并非完全不可能。
I am altogether on your sidein this matter. 在這個問題上，我完全站在你一邊。
3. 表示“總的說來” (通常置于句首)。如：
It was raining, butaltogether it was a good trip. 雖然天下著雨，但總的說來旅途還是很愉快。
