A report from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences' Commission reveals that, due to a job market which disproportionately rewards graduates in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and  mathematics) fields, more and more students are seeking degrees in business and hard-science subjects.
Some institutions have responded by cutting budgets in the arts and humanities and directing those  funds elsewhere. That's the wrong thing to do. The humanities-the study of languages , literature, history,  philosophy, religion, ethics, etc.-and the arts are vital to our future. We should be investing more funds,  more time and more expertise, not less, into these endeavors.
What detractors(詆毀者) of the "soft" subjects miss is that the arts and humanities provide an essential framework and context for understanding the wider world. Studying the humanities strengthens the ability to communicate and work with others. It allows students to develop broad intellectual and cultural understanding; it nurtures creativity and deepens participation in public discourse and modem democracy.
The commission's report points out that "at the very moment when China is seeking to adopt our model of broad education in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences as a stimulus to  invention, the United States is instead narrowing our focus and abandoning our sense of what education has been and should continue to be - our sense of what makes America great."
These are the telling statistics: First, federal funding for helping American students include international training in their education has been cut 41 percent in four years. Second, the National  Assessment of Educational Progress test shows that only less than a quarter of eighth- and 12th-grade US students are proficient in reading, writing and civics.
How can we possibly equip the US for its leadership role in an increasingly connected world if we are not adequately teaching students to communicate and helping them understand and encounter diverse perspectives? If we fail to invest in the arts and humanities, our country's future leaders will not have the ability to connect on an emotional level with others. This ability is developed by studying the humanities, and in the global community this skill is not optional - it's essential.
In a word, we must enthusiastically support and fund the study of the arts and humanities. For anyone concerned with how this translates into a sound economy and a sound financial future, simply recall what Steve Jobs told graduates of Standford University in 2005: One of the most influential experiences in his brief time at Reed College was his exposure to the fine art of calligraphy(書法). It taught him the important lesson of the relationship between discipline and creativity.
    58. What can be inferred from the passage?
        A. Business and hard-science subjects are based upon the arts and humanities.
        B. At present too much emphasis and investment are put on science in America.
        C. More students will learn the arts and humanities instead of science in the USA.
        D. China has spent more money in the humanities and social sciences than the USA.
    59. The author mentions Steve Jobs in the last paragraph to prove that _____.
        A. science has a close relationship with the arts and humanities
        B. investment in the and and humanities promotes economic development
        C. calligraphy plays a determining role in Steve Jobs' accomplishment
        D. Reed College supports and funds the study of the arts and humanities
    60. Which of the following is the most suitable title for this passage?
        A. Significance of arts and humanities         B. Key qualities of future leaders
        C. Decline of arts and humanities             D. Rise and fall of hard sciences
    C
                                 Fuel Cell Technology for Cars
Fill her up with hydrogen? That's what some
California motorists may be saying soon, as car makers try
to speed up production of zero emission(零排放) cars to
meet state requirements in the near future.
Beneath the skin of this ordinary looking Hondas
FCX Concept Vehicle sits an electro-chemical reactor: a
hand built, astronomically expensive power plant known
as a fuel cell. It's expected to be running ordinary family cars on California's roads within three years.
So what exactly is a fuel cell, anyway? Why are governments, private businesses and academic institutions cooperating to develop and produce them? A fuel cell, very simply described, is a power generator, making electricity through the combination of hydrogen and oxygen. Fuel cells generate electrical power quietly and efficiently, without pollution, Unlike power sources that use fossil fuels, the only by-products from an operating fuel cell are heat and water. To be more technical about it, a hydrogen atom with its one electron, attempts to pass through a fuel cell membrane(膜) to unite with an oxygen atom. The membrane allows only the hydrogen proton(質(zhì)子) to pass through, forcing its electron to run around the membrane to catch up with the proton on the other side. This creates electricity, water, and heat, but no exhaust emissions.
If the fuel cell is powered with pure hydrogen, it has the potential to be up t0 80-percent efficient, That is, it turns 80 percent of the energy content of the hydrogen into electrical energy. However, we still need to turn the electrical energy into mechanical work. This is accomplished by the electric motor. A reasonable number for the efficiency of the motor is about 80 percent. So we have 80-percent efficiency in generating electricity, and 80-percent efficiency turning it into mechanical power. That gives an overall efficiency of about64 percent. Honda's FCX concept vehicle reportedly has 60-percent energy efficiency, which is twice or even three times more efficient than usual cars.
But in spite of all the advantages described above, experts say, "We still have technical challenges getting this extremely complex system to work properly, the way customers expect it to work. There are challenges in using new fuels, and providing the new fuel basic facilities. And before fuel cell vehicles hit the road, there will have to be a network of hydrogen stations that will allow drivers to fill up with the flammable gas, under 36-hundred pounds of pressure."
    61. What can be inferred from California's "zero emissions policy"?
       A. New cars with fuel cell technology will surely become much cheaper.
       B. By carrying out the policy, traffic will not be so busy as it is now.
       C. The quality of life in California will improve once this policy is in effect.
       D. With facilities of new kinds, more local employment will be created.
    62. What does the phrase "power plant" refer to?
       A. A power device generating electricity.       B. A power station providing electricity.
       C. A power component consuming electricity.   D. A power engine using electricity.
    63. One of the reasons why fuel cell powered vehicles are superior is that              .
       A. they give out almost no water or heat       B. they run faster and more smoothly
       C. they give out almost no noise             D. they turn 64% of the energy into electricity
    64. What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
       A. Customers will not think it a good idea to develop fuel cell technology.
       B. It is still not very easy to speed up production of zero emission cars.
       C. We can't ignore the financial problems to build a network of hydrogen stations.
       D. We still have much difficulty turning all the chains of the business into reality.

We have all heard the expression: "Remember to stop and smell the roses." But, how often do we really take time out of our hectic fast-paced lives to notice the world around us?
I am as guilty as anyone of tuning out the world in this manner, especially when I am driving on California's overcrowded streets. A short time ago, however, I witnessed an event that showed me how being wrapped up in my own little world has kept me from being fully aware of the bigger world picture around me.
I was driving to a business appointment and, as usual, I was planning in my mind what I was going to say. I came to a very busy crossroads where the stoplight had just turned red. "All right," I thought to myself, "I can beat the next light if I race ahead of the pack ."My mind and car were in auto pilot, ready to go when suddenly my trance was broken by an unforgettable sight. A young couple, both blind, were walking arm-in-arm across this busy crossroads with cars whizzing by in every direction. The man was holding the hand of a little boy , while the woman was clutching a baby sling to her chest, obviously carrying a child. Each of them had a white cane extended, searching for clues to navigate them across the crossroads.
Initially I was moved. They were overcoming what I felt was one of the most feared handicaps-blindness. "Wouldn't it be terrible to be blind?" I thought. Without realizing the danger they were in, they were walking right the path of oncoming cars. I was frightened for them because I didn't know if the other drivers understood what was happening.
As I watched from the front line of traffic (I had the best seat in the house), I saw a miracle unfold before my eyes. Every car in every direction came to a simultaneous stop. I never heard the screech of brakes or even the peep of a car horn. Nobody even yelled, "Get out of the way!" Everything froze. In that moment, time seemed to stand still for this family. Amazed , I looked at the cars around me to verify that we were all seeing the same thing, I noticed that everyone's attention was also fixed on the couple. Never skipping a beat, the couple adjusted their course as they followed the coaching. Trusting their white canes and the calls from some concerned citizens, they made it to the other side of the road. As they arrived at the curb, one thing struck me-they were still arm-in-arm .I was taken aback by the emotionless expressions on their faces and judged that they had no idea what was really going on around them. Yet I immediately sensed the sighs of relief exhaled by everyone stopped at that intersection.
As I glanced into the cars around me, the driver on my right was mouthing the words "oh, did you see that?!" The driver to the left of me was saying, "I can't believe it!" I think all of us were deeply moved by what we had just witnessed. Here were human beings stepping outside themselves for a moment to help four people in need.
I have reflected back on this situation many times since it happened and have leamed several powerful lessons from it. Take time to look around and really see what is going on in front of you right now. Do this and you will realize that this moment is all there is, more importantly, this moment is all that you have to make a difference in life.
As I drove away from that busy intersection, I did so with more awareness of life and compassion for others than I had arrived there with. Since then I have made the decision to really see life as I go about my daily activities and use my God-given talents to help others less fortunate.
Do yourself a favor as you walk through life: Slow down and take the time to really see. Take a moment to see what is going on around you right now, right where you are. You may be missing
    something wonderful.

While feelings of disgust can increase behaviors such as lying and cheating, cleanliness can help people return to ethical behavior, according to a recent study by marketing experts at Rice University, Pennsylvania State University and Arizona State University. The study highlights the powerful impact  emotions have on individual decision-making.
As an emotion, disgust is designed as a protection. When people feel disgusted, they tend to remove themselves from a situation. The instinct is to protect oneself. People become focused on 'self' and they're less likely to think about other people. Small cheating starts to occur: If I'm disgusted and more focused on myself and I need to lie a little bit to gain a small advantage, I'II do that. That's the underlying mechanism.
In turn, the researchers found that cleansing behaviors actually keep the self-serving effects of disgust to a minimum. If you can make people think of cleaning products, the likelihood of cheating also goes away. People don't know it, but these small emotions are constantly affecting them.
The researchers conducted three randomized experiments causing disgust through various means.  The study involved 600 participants around the United States; both genders were equally represented. In one experiment, participants evaluated consumer products such as antidiarrheal medicine(止瀉藥),and diapers(尿布).In another, participants wrote essays about their most disgusting memory. In the third, participants watched a disgusting toilet scene from the movie "Trainspotting ". Once effectively disgusted, participants were willing to lie and cheat for financial gain.
In another set of experiments, after falling into the state of disgust on participants, the researchers then had them evaluate cleansing products, such as household cleaners and body washes. Those who evaluated the cleansing products did not engage in deceptive behaviors any more than those in the neutral emotion condition.
At the basic level, if you have environments that are cleaner, people should be less likely to feel  disgusted. If there is less likelihood to feel disgusted, there will be a lower likelihood that people need to be self-focused and there will be a higher likelihood for people to cooperate with each other.
The deeper meaning of the study's findings is that these powerful emotions can be caused by a variety of small things when people are reading the newspaper or listening to the radio. What we found is that unless you ask people, they often don't know they're feeling disgusted. The question is how to make people more self-aware and more thoughtful about the decision-making process.

    第五部分
Recently, it has been a great public concern that the students lack self-protection awareness. As is vividly shown in the picture, society, schools, parents and especially students should work together to ensure students’ security.
There is a lack of social experience among students and therefore learning how to protect ourselves is of great significance to us all. For one thing, security comes first. Without security, we can achieve nothing and can not live up to parents’ expectations. For another thing, protecting ourselves contributes to the healthy development of the students, which is associated with the happiness of every family. Meanwhile, it also helps to build a more harmonious society.
Personally, in order to protect us students, above all, we should strengthen our security awareness. Besides, when accidents occur, we should calm down and turn to teachers or parents for help. The government also plays a leading role in protecting students. In a word, only by the combined efforts of every side involved can we live and study in harmony. (155 words)

    Text 1
W: Will you please help me? I lost my keys and can’t get into my apartment.
M: We’ll send someone over right away to change your lock and give you a new set of keys, ma’am.
    Text 2
W: My dear, please learn how to put the knives and forks on the table properly. I know there’re too many of them, but you can still make them look nice and neat. See? Like this…
    M: This is so boring!
    Text 3
W: I think I have a problem. I can’t stop checking my phone and text messages. I even check them in the middle of the night!
M: That’s too bad. You should have a talk with a psychologist.
    Text 4
M: You can’t enter here, ma’am. The line starts over there.
W: Over there, all the way down the street?
M: Yes. There’s about a two-hour wait to get into the club.
W: It’s not worth my time. I’m going somewhere else.
    Text 5
    M: Look up there! It’s a rainbow!
W: No — there are two of them! This is a lucky day! We’ll have a super weekend.
    Text 6
M: Can I help you, madam?
W: Yes. I bought this jacket here last week. I wore it once, and now look at it. I was hoping to get my money back.
M: Do you have your bill list?
    W: Yes, it’s right here.
M: Thanks. I’m wondering whether you washed it with any other clothing, or whether you washed it in hot water, perhaps.
W: No, I washed it by itself in cold water, just like it says in the instructions.
M: I see. Perhaps something is wrong with your washing machine.
W: Sir, I’m actually a fashion designer. I’ve been making my own clothes for fifteen years. I have never seen a piece of clothing look like this after washing it only once…unless there is a problem with the cloth. I’d be happy to speak with your manager.
M: No, that’s all right, madam. I’ll do what you asked for.
    Text 7
M: Help me write an ad.
    W: For what?
M: I need to earn some extra money during school. I want to start giving music lessons.
W: I didn’t know you played an instrument.
M: I play the guitar pretty well. Anyway, let’s get started. I’ll talk, and you write.
    W: Um…
M: OK. Write down that a handsome, charming young man is willing to give guitar lessons for forty dollars an hour…
W: Handsome? Charming? This isn’t an online dating site. And you’re charging too much. You’re only a college student, not a professional musician. You should be charging half that.
M: OK, how about thirty dollars an hour, then? Usually, lessons are only half an hour at a time. So, I won’t be making much money at all if I charge less than that.
    W: I see your point.
    Text 8
W: Son, it’s time you decided on a course of study. You’ve been in college for almost two years. Haven’t you decided what you want to do with your life?
M: That’s the big question, Mom. And I haven’t had any idea yet. But I have been thinking hard about what I want to study. I think I should study chemistry. The major will look good on applications if I want to apply to medical school. It’ll also look good on job applications if I decide to join a big company after I graduate. I could work for a company that makes medicine. Or I could become an artist.
W: Wait a minute — did you say you want to become an artist? We aren’t sending you to art school…
M: I didn’t say that. But if I did want to be an artist, studying chemistry might be useful. Right now, I’m learning about some famous painters who studied chemistry. Some of them created their own paints, using what they learned in their chemistry courses.
W: You’re worrying me, Daniel. I think I need to give your dad a phone call…
    Text 9
    M: How was school today?
W: It was fun. Our class went on a field trip to the Museum of Modern Art.
M: You did? How did you get there?
    W: We took the bus.
M: Oh, really? Isn’t the subway faster?
W: Sure. But it’s also more crowded. The teachers like to keep an eye on us.
M: I see. So, how was the museum?
W: It was great. It is so big that we only saw about half of the paintings. I’d have to go back another day to see them all. But I did see some great ones!
M: Did you have a favorite?
W: Yeah. My favorite was a painting by Diego Rivera. I stared at it for about fifteen minutes. There were some nice ones by his wife Frida Kahlo, too.
M: Yes. I’ve seen those. My favorite painting there is actually by Henri Matisse. Did you see that one?
    W: No, I didn’t.
M: Well, we should go to the museum together this summer so I can show it to you.
    Text 10
On the first day of her new job, Elaine arrived at a quarter to nine. She took the elevator to the eleventh floor, and the secretary showed her where her desk and computer would be. She tried to talk to the man and woman seated near her, but they were not friendly. After several hours, her boss came to give her an assignment. Elaine was surprised that he was not the same man who had interviewed her. This man was short and thin. He introduced himself as Tim and gave her a file of reports. She spent the rest of the day trying to do the work he left her, but it was very confusing. At five o’clock, she left the office and got back on the elevator. On the tenth floor, she was greeted by John, the man who had interviewed her for her position. “Elaine!” he said, “I thought you were starting with us today.” “Oh, my!” she said, “Have I been in the wrong office all day?”
