The elephant was lying heavily on its side, fast asleep. A few dogs started barking at it. The elephant woke up in a terrible anger: it chased the dogs into the village where they ran for safety.
That didn't stop the elephant. It destroyed a dozen houses and injured several people. The villagers were scared and angry. Then someone suggested calling Parbati, the elephant princess.
Parbati Barua's father was a hunter of tigers and an elephant tamer. He taught Parbati to ride an
elephant before she could even walk. He also taught her the dangerous art of the elephant round - up – how to catch wild elephants.
Parbati hasn't always lived in the jungle. After a happy childhood hunting with her father, she was sent to boarding school in the city. But Parbati never got used to being there and many years later she went back to her old fife. "Life in the city is too dull. Catching elephants is an adventure and the
excitement lasts for days after the chase," she says.
But Parbati doesn't catch elephants just for fun. "My work," she says, "is to rescue man from the elephants, and to keep the elephants safe from man. " And this is exactly what Parbati has been doing for many years. Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry : for many years, illegal hunters have attacked it and its home in the jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land- It is now fighting back. Whenever wild elephants enter a tea garden or a village, Parbati is called to guide the animals back to the jungle be- fore they can kill.
The work of an elephant tamer also involves love and devotion. A good elephant tamer will spend hours a day singing love songs to a newly captured elephant. " Eventually they grow to love their tamers and never forget them. They are also more loyal than humans, " she said, as she climbed up one of her
elephants and sat on die giant, happy animal. An elephant princess indeed!

Chinese consumers' crazy appetite for luxury goods and services appears unstoppable, with just 2 percent of the Chinese population responsible for one-third of the world's luxury items.
As China's economic miracle develops, the market opportunities for all sorts of luxury goods and services are increasing. Luxury consumption in China now extends way beyond well - known car. Clothing and jewelry brands. For example, the luxury jet market ,n China is the fastest - growing in the world, even outstripping that of the United States, with a market share of 25 percent. This trend appears to
continue, with 20 to 30 percent growth expected in China, compared with only 2 to 3 percent in the US. But more important, China's luxury jet market growth represents a major development in the private
consumption of luxury items.
China's high - quality red wine market also provides evidence of the growth in private consumption of luxury goods. In 2013, China became the largest market for red? wine? in the world, even overtaking the French, with 1. 86 billion bottles consumed in China last year. Over the past five years, China's red wine consumption has grown 136 percent.
According to my ongoing consumer research in this area while working at the University of
International Business and Economics in Beijing, public consumption of such expensive global luxury brands such as Prada and Armani is easily explained by the desire to "gain face" and publicly display social climbing through material possesses. On the other hand, it is "self-reward" that lies behind consumer motivation in this area Chinese consumer, who have experienced rapid financial and economic gains appear particularly prone to the need to reward themselves for their success. But this has little to do with "gaining face" and impressing others and much more to do with the need for personal contentment.
Finally, the growth in private luxury consumption in China is set to continue in part due to the
maturity of the Chinese consumer and advancement of Chinese consumer culture generally.

A. A news reporter, B. An accountant.
C. A professor. D. A conductor.
29. The underlined word "outstripping" in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.
A. falling far behind of
B. going hand in hand
C. going far ahead of
D. keeping pace with
30. What can we learn from paragraph 2 and 3 ?
A. China's luxury jet market growth is only 2 to 3%.
B. French was once the largest market for red wine in the world before 2013.
C. The luxury jet market in the US shares 25% of the jet consumption in the world.
D. China's red wine consumption has increased to 1. 86 billion bottles since 2013.
31. What can be the best title for the passage?

Even if trees cannot walk, they are still on the move.
In parts of the Arctic, entire forests are moving northward. Across Ac Arctic, temperatures are rising faster than anywhere else in Ac world. As that happens. Tie tree line that marks where forests stop and the treeless tundra (凍土地帶) starts has been shifting northward. Trees growing along the tree line must protect themselves from the cold wind. To do this, plants tend to grow horizontal ( 水平的) branches low to the ground. The energy it take, for trees to grow this way means they don't have enough energy to make seeds.
But as Earth's climate has been warming, trees no longer have to just grow horizontally. Many can in. Stead grow up, toward Ac sky. This takes less energy. And with all that leftover energy. these trees have started producing more seeds. This happens especially in places where the white spruce( 白云杉) grows.
White spruce, which is a North American tree, is quite able to produce a lot of seeds, which can move long distances in the wind. When wind - blown seeds end up on the tundra beyond Ac tree line, they eventually can sprout ( 發(fā)芽) new trees. This explains how a forest can move. Of course. Ac process would work only if Ac tundra were warm enough. But in recent years, Ac whole planet has been
warming.
New trees will provide shelters for some snow. Keeping the sun's rays from making the white surface disappear. Instead, the trees absorb the sun's heat. This warms the surrounding air. The extra warmth
encourages even more trees to produce seeds. That further boosts a forest's ability to expand. In addition, more trees will trap more snow, preventing much of it from being blown away. Snow can trap heat in the soil below, which encourages trees to grow. The recent rise of temperature has helped more trees grow. The recent rise of temperature has helped more trees grow past the tree line. People worry about impacts on the animals that depend on frozen conditions for food and shelter.
32. What is the main cause of the trees in the Arctic moving northward?
A. The shrinking of northern tundra. B. The rising temperature.
C. The fierce and cold wind. D. The abundant resources in the north.
33. What does the underlined word, "this" , in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. To produce more seeds. B. To move northward
C. To respond to the climate change. D. To protect themselves from the cold wind.
34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph^
A. New trees can trap the snow, which may make the soil colder.
B. The trapped snow prevents new trees from producing more seeds.
C. New trees can make the surrounding air warmer.
D. New trees can bring more food and shelter for local animals.
35. The passage is most probably taken from
A. a science report B. a health report
C. a fashion magazine D. a children's magazine.

As a high school student, it is natural for us to meet problems in our school life. Both our teachers and parents show their love for us every day in the form of praises, criticisms or even complaints. We should be aware of it and grateful to it.
In my opinion, the most important duty for you today is to learn knowledge and learn how to deal with different difficulties at home and at school. To face the unknown world is our next step after graduation.

W: There is! We’ve been for a walk in Central Park. It’s so big! Everything here is big. And we’ve climbed the Empire State Building. The view was fantastic.
M: Have you seen the Statue of Liberty yet?
W: Oh, yes, we have. We’ve just had a helicopter out of the city, and we flew really close to it.
M: What about a show? Have you seen a show on Broadway yet?
W: No, we haven’t. We’re going to see one on our last night here, but we haven’t decided what to see yet.

W: What are you reading?
M: It is a book written by a guy who was born without arms or legs.
W: What? So, how does he get around?
M: He can actually walk pretty well, but he can’t move that fast. He also has an assistant who helps him. He is actually quite successful.
W: He must have worked pretty hard.
M: Yeah. He travels around the world and gives speeches to young people. He’s changed many people’s lives. Even when nothing seemed possible, he stayed positive and put in even more effort.

M: So, a s you can see, she’s a beauty. One previous owner kept it in the garage the whole time, and only drove it on the weekends.
W: That ’s why it only has about 25,000 miles on it, even though it’s ten years old.
M: Exactly. The owner also kept all the service records. So you can tell it’s been taken care of.
W: Does this car come with a service contract?
M: All our cars come with a 30-day agreement, so you won’t pay for anything within the first month. But since this car is used, we can’t offer anything beyond that.
W: I see. The price of almost $15,000 seems a little high. Is there any way we can bring that down?
M: This car is in very good condition, madam. And based on our research of similar cars being
sold in the area, we believe it’s a fair price. All taxes and fees are included as well.
W: OK. Can I take it for a test drive?
M: Absolutely! Let me just get the keys.

W: I’ll be leaving on the fifth of August.
M: That’s only a few days from now. How many weeks are you going to be taking?
W: I have two weeks, but I want to save a week and take it sometime during the winter.
M: Where are you going now?
W: To the beach. Just think, in a few days I’ll be swimming every day, playing beach volleyball, lying in the sun and just taking it easy.
M: Don’t tell me about it. It sounds too good.
W: What about you? When are you planning to take your vacation?
M: I don’t know. I should start thinking about it, I guess.
W: What do you like to do?
M: All the things that you are going to be doing. But that’s the tro uble. I like both summer and winter sports.
W: Well, take part of your vacation and the rest of it in January or February.
M: Sounds good.

Good afternoon everybody and welcome to this class on English words. I hope that all of you can hear me. If not, please let me know. I am Professor John Morris. I’ll be your teacher for the next 13 weeks. As you can probably tell, this is one of the most popular and crowded classes. Indeed, every time this course is offered, this room is very full. Why is that? Well, in order to use the English language, it’s very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are formed. Just to mention one figure and there are many, there are about 1 million words in English. If you are an English learner, you may wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing, you don’t have to. No native speaker exists who knows all of the words in the English language. Besides, there are short-cut s. Short-cuts? Yes, for example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages , such as Greek and French, you’ll understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Let me put it this way, knowing the rules will help you to master a large number of words. This is probably the NO.1 rea son why this class is so popular.
