A small piece of fish each, day may keep the heart doctor away. That’s the finding of a study of Dutchmen in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce(英兩) of salt water fish per day compared to those who never ate fish.
The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific support to the long-held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart.
Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But previous research has shown that the level of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption average more than 3 ounces.
F or 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate no fish. At the start of the study, average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day, with more men eating lean fish than fatty fish.
During the next two decades, 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos. This relationship was true regardless of other factors such as age, high blood pressure, or blood cholesterol levels.

The other day at a supermarket, I saw a naughty boy of about six crying loudly, falling to the floor and refusing to move. All the while the troubled mother was trying to persuade him to behave well but failed.A little smack on his bottom would have done the job,I thought.
Teenagers also cause discipline(紀(jì)律)problems. As a teacher, I had a 16-year-old student who had fallen in love with a waiter at a fast-food restaurant. In fact, she had left home to stay with him.So we decided to put her in the school hostel. She refused. When she heard her mother begging her to stay in the hostel she turned round and said:“Why don't you stay in the hostel if you like it so much?”
My palms were itching to slap her for being so rude but the poor mother continued to cajole her, hoping that gentle persuasion would work wonders. It did not.The last I heard, she had run away from home again.
The list goes on and on.Could it be that today's parents are softer and believe that they must not rod(棍棒懲罰)their children for fear of the bad result? Or do they actually believe that the children will get rid of the bad habits and behave well naturally as they grow older? I beg to disagree.I believe it is the parents' duty to discipline the children even at a young age.
My children who are now adults will prove the fact that I used the rod when I thought it necessary.Later when they went abroad, they related to their British university friends on how they were disciplined.Their friends abroad were filled with horror and told my daughter that I could be charged with child abuse(虐待).However,my daughter showed great respect for me when she told them that she would not be where she was today if not for my strict discipline.

I have a close friend who has a good family tradition, that is, each year after Thanksgiving dinner, all of the people sit around in the living room and each person takes a few minutes and gives thanks for what really matters and what has added value to their life over the last year. This is something I valued and followed. I have thought about a lot in the last year, and I finally came up with two things.
The first one is the healthiness of my daughter. She’s as healthy as she can be, and her weight and height are in good condition and she has no illnesses or genetic diseases. I am so thankful for having this wonderful baby in my life, and thankful that she has the gift of good health.
Secondly, I am thankful for the discovery of the value of writing in my life. A year ago, my website. The simple Dollar was only a few weeks old and was far from popular, but on Thanksgiving Day Last year it had about three score readers who ordered it in advance. The process of writing was bringing me enjoyment, but I hadn’t yet realized that I could be successful in it and attract many readers. This past year showed me a lot and I am deeply thankful for it.
After thinking for a while, I began to realize that it was a very powerful and wonderful positive exercise. You spend time reflecting deeply on the positive things in your life, and you often realize that even when things are bad, you do have a lot to be thankful for because there is lots of good in your life, and it can shine a bright light even in a dark spot in your life.

    第二節(jié) 書(shū)面表達(dá)(滿(mǎn)分25分)
    Dear Tom,
With the coming of the college entrance examinations, all the students should make a choice.
What university should they choose to study in? what major should they study in university? We will also be faced with the same problem in year, so it brings a heated discussion among us students.
Some students think that it is better to rely on teachers or parents because they are more experienced. On the contrary, some other students think now they are already grown – ups, so they can decide everything for themselves. Besides, they agree that parents and teachers may have the ideas that may be out of date.
As far as I’m concerned, I think teachers and parents have more life experience. Also what they do will obviously benefit us. In a word, as students, we should take teachers and parents’ advice.
    Look forward to your reply!
     Yours sincerely,
     Li Hua

    Text 10
Jane is only four and doesn’t go to school. her grandpa was a teacher and now stays at home. He teaches the girl to read and write. The girl studies hard and learns a lot. She can count from one to one hundred, read some storybooks and write the names of her family. Her parents are happy and often show her off to others.
Once, Mrs. Black took her daughter Jane to a birthday party. The guests praised a rich woman’s boy. Mrs. Black asked him a few questions, but all his answers were wrong. Jane began to laugh at him. The rich woman was angry. She told her friend, a teacher, to ask the little girl some questions, but she answered all of them correctly. The teacher was surprised. Then she asked, “There are three flies on a table. How many will be left if I kill one?” “One,” answered Jane. “You are wrong,” called out the rich woman. “All of them will fly away!” “Do you think a dead fly can fly, ma’am?” asked the little girl.
