While living expenses vary from student to student, the Financial Aid and Fellowship Board uses the standard student budget in determining financial aid awards. This budget assumes a moderate student lifestyle. While the standard budget does not include the cost of a personal computer required for the MBA Program, you may finance your computer purchase with a loan.

The standard student budget establishes the annual limit on financial aid (grants and loans from all sources) available to each student under ordinary circumstances. The HLS Financial Aid Committee, which includes faculty, students and administrators, considers Bureau of Labor Statistics data in conjunction with local area rental rates and student-reported living expenses to arrive at a reasonable budget that allows for a moderate standard of living for all students.

Books and Supplies Expenses
The Financial Aid Committee anticipates that some first-year students will spend more than the allowance for books and supplies, because book costs for first year students are typically higher than those for second and third year students. Moreover, book costs for the first semester of the first year are typically higher than those for the second semester. The Committee believes that the Books and Supplies Allowance is sufficient to cover these costs for most first year students, but some students may find that they need to allocate some funds from their Room/Board/Personal allocation to meet their book and supply costs.
Personal Living Expenses
The standard 2014-15 budget includes a nine-month Room/Board/Personal expense living allowance of $20,722, which works out to a monthly allowance of $2,302. We intentionally do not provide our interpretation of how this amount of money should be broken down across various expense categories. This is a highly personal decision; therefore, we leave it to you to allocate this allowance among your living and other expenses based on your particular needs and priorities. Enrollment in the Dental Insurance plan is optional but recommended for HLS students, and students may choose to allocate a portion of the Room/Board/Personal allowance in the standard student budget toward enrollment in this plan. Fee-for-service dental options are also available through Harvard University Health Services Dental Services. Please note that enrollment in the dental plan and the higher cost of books and supplies for some first year students may necessitate allocating a small portion of the Room/Board/Personal Allowance toward these expenses, and therefore may leave a lower remaining monthly allowance for living expenses.

§ The disability insurance fee is a mandatory, non-waivable fee assessed on an annual basis to all students from the time they matriculate at HMS until they graduate from HMS. This includes the time that students may spend in pursuit of additional degrees or other enrichment activities.
¶ The facilities fee is reduced tuition ordinarily charged after 4 years (8 semesters) of full tuition have been charged.

* A suggested breakdown of various living expenses listed above is indicated. This itemization is only a guideline, and students should plan a budget and economize to ensure that their actual expenses do not exceed the total allowable living expense budget.
† New Pathway students purchase their black bag and diagnostic equipment during their first year; HST students purchase equipment during their second year. Therefore, the first-year budget for HST students will be $750 less than the figure listed above, and the second-year budget will be $750 more.
Students who chose to waive the Harvard Blue Cross/Blue Shield Health Insurance Plan will have this budget item removed from their cost of attendance budget.
The housing allowance for first-year students (Class of 2019) is based on the average cost of a Vanderbilt Hall residence contract for August 2015 – May 2016, and 2 months of off-campus housing budget for June and July 2016. Students with spouses, partners, or dependents, or students choosing not to live in dormitory housing, may request an off-campus housing allowance from the HMS Financial Aid Office. For returning students, the housing allowance is based on the assumption that students are sharing rental units in the community. See Section 8 for more information about Housing.
The National Board USMLE Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills) Exam fee is currently included in the third-year student budget. The travel expenses associated with the exam are included in the fourth-year budget.
OPTION: The federal government permits students to borrow an unsubsidized direct loan to purchase a computer, printer, and software for school. Students interested in this option should speak with a financial aid staff member prior to the purchase. Students are limited to one such purchase during their tenure at HMS. The one-time purchase maximum is $2,500.
