Research strengths
QMU has a strong external profile in the dissemination and translation of research, knowledge and skills for economic, social and cultural benefits to society. Our specific expertise lies in: health; food and drink; sustainable business; tourism; social sciences; communications; and performing arts. Our commitment to knowledge exchange aims to reinforce employability in our curriculum and provide a focus for our applied research. The University has a strong track record in building relationships with external organisations particularly Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Key services include: research; consultancy; continuous professional development and training; graduate placement; internships; Knowledge Transfer Partnerships; and excellent facilities.

Our research is dedicated to improving the quality of life and building the evidence-base to shape policy and practice development. The value of the work is measured by the social usefulness, impact, practicality and applicability of its outcomes. Work is focused on six research themes: Media, Culture and Production; Speech and Communication; Sustainable Business; Nutrition and Metabolism in Health and Disease; Rehabilitation Sciences; Social Determinants of Health. Our specialist research centres include the Clinical Audiology, Speech and Language (CASL) Research Centre launched this year, The Institute for International Health and Development and The International Centre for the Study of Planned Events.

Employability
QMU aims to ensure that in addition to gaining sound academic qualifications our students have the necessary attributes to be successful in securing relevant employment at the end of their studies. The University regularly consults with employers in a bid to identify exactly what skills and experiences are required, our 91% graduate employability (HESA 2011) reflects the high calibre and employability of our graduates.

Initiatives such as student internship programmes, international exchanges, conferences and volunteering programmes are all excellent ways for students to gain valuable experience. Placements in the workplace are compulsory in the majority of our Health Sciences programmes, and there is greater focus on placements on courses offered by our School of Arts, Social Sciences and Management. The University’s commitment to developing the links between education and business is reflected through its numerous partnerships which include the East Lothian Hospitality and Tourism Academy and the recent establishment, on campus, of the Business Gateway and Business Innovation Zone. Internships are offered by the Saltire Foundation, and Third Sector Internships Scotland, a collaboration between QMU, the Open University in Scotland and the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations has proved highly successful and this year alone has offered over 120 paid internships across Scotland.
