The department of mathematics in Karlsruhe is one of 11 departments at a large technical university in Germany, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. It offers for all students a high level education and supports young researchers with scientific activities in many mathematical disciplines.

At the department about 40 professors and lecturers together with approximately 80 PhD students and PostDocs provide an excellent programme for more than 1000 students in mathematics; in addition, all students in natural sciences or engineering get the basic mathematical education from us. The scientific programme is complemented by visiting researchers from all over the world.

The research at our department is concentrated into three focuses and is complemented by several individual projects. The researchers at the department maintain many contacts to scientific institutions in Germany and abroad, and they present their results regularly on large conferences. They serve as editors of international journals and are active in mathematical organizations.

An important task of the faculty is the education of students for the next generation of teachers in mathematics. The didactics team offers also activities for schools and teachers in the mathematical didactics laboratory which was already visited by more than 700 groups from schools.
