1.QMUL’s Chevening Scholarships

QMUL works closely with the Chevening - the UK government’s international scheme aimed at developing global leaders - to provide a large number of full scholarships for study on our one-year Masters courses.
Every year QMUL hosts a large cohort of the 1500 Chevening Scholars who come to study at universities all over the UK. In 2016-17 we have a record of 87 scholars joining QMUL from countries across the globe!
QMUL’s Chevening Scholars play an active role in our lively and diverse student community and are invited to attend our annual International Scholars Reception, as well as a variety of other scholarship events throughout the year.

(1)The Awards
Chevening Scholarships are available for students from all nationalities.
All Chevening awards cover full overseas tuition fees, as well as providing a stipend for living costs, air-fares, and a variety of other expenses.
Chevening Scholars also benefit from a year-long programme of events helping you experience the best of British culture and to make the most of your time in the UK.
There are two types of award on offer at QMUL:
QMUL-Chevening Scholarships
A large number of these awards will be available across all one-year QMUL masters courses.
QMUL-Chevening Partner Awards
In addition to the QMUL-Chevening Scholarships, QMUL also supports an additional seventeen QMUL-Chevening Partner Awards. These awards are for specific academic departments and for particular courses.
(2)How to Apply
Applications for all scholarships must be made directly to the Chevening: full details on how to apply are available on the Chevening’s webpages.
In order to be considered for a QMUL-Chevening Partner Award, candidates are encouraged to place QMUL as their first choice university.
The deadline for applications is Tuesday 8 November 12:00 GMT.
Candidates should also apply for their chosen Masters programme at QMUL through our online portal in the normal way.
Candidates are encouraged to QMUL as early as possible to ensure that their application can be processed in a time to meet the Chevening’s deadline for the confirmation of their unconditional university offer in July 2017.

2.QMUL Commonwealth Scholarships

In 2017-18 we will be hosting an unprecedented number of Commonwealth Scholars from across the globe.
Commonwealth Scholarships at QMUL typically cover full overseas tuition fees, living costs, airfares, and a variety of other expenses. Scholars from developing Commonwealth countries are eligible to apply for both Masters and PhD's, and developed Commonwealth countries are eligible to apply for PhD's.
All candidates should apply to QMUL online following our normal application procedures (please be aware that candidates applying for a Commonwealth Scholarship may have an earlier application deadline than normal) and will also need to make an application directly to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.

Commonwealth Scholarships for Master’s and PhD study
Each year QMUL welcomes a number of Master’s and PhD students on Commonwealth Scholarships – candidates study a diverse range of courses from Business and Finance, to Global Health, Human Rights Law, and Medical Microbiology.

In 2017-18 QMUL will host an unprecedented number of Commonwealth Shared Scholars. We will be offering six awards available across a range of courses in all three of our academic faculties.
These awards acknowledge the high quality of these courses and offer candidates the opportunity to develop expert skills and up-to-the-minute knowledge to help tackle global problems.
(2)Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship
In 2016-17, QMUL hosted ten Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships for courses in our School of Medicine and Dentistry, recognising the excellent student experience and learning outcomes that these courses provide.
QMUL are hosting a further ten Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships for September 2017 entry, across five courses in our School of Medicine and Dentistry.
(3)Commonwealth Split-site (PhD) Scholarships
QMUL has research links across the globe and, as part of these partnerships, has the capacity to support split-site PhD study in a very wide range of research areas.
(4)Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD or Split-site PhD Study (developed country citizens)
These awards offer funding for up to three years of doctoral study at one of QMUL’s academic Schools or Institutes.
QMUL PhD students benefit from a stimulating research environment, excellent facilities, a wide range of development and training opportunities, and a supportive community of fellow researchers at our Doctoral College.

A government-backed Postgraduate Loans Scheme (PGL) are available for Masters degrees for the 2016/17 academic year.

(1)How much can a student borrow?
Loans of up to £10,000 are available for eligible students. For part-time courses, the £10,000 is split over the number of years that the course lasts. Eg for a two-year course, you would get up to £5000 in each year. It is paid in three equal instalments across the academic year.

(2)Who is eligible for a PGL?
This loan is only for students undertaking a taught Masters or Masters by Research degree in any subject.
The following criteria apply:
You must be aged under 60 on 1st August of the year in which you start your course.
You must be ordinarily resident in the UK or Islands of the UK on the first day of the first academic year of the course. As an EU student, you must have been ordinarily resident in the EEA/Switzerland for three years prior to the first day of the first academic year of the course.
You must have been most recently resident in England.
You must not have moved to England from elsewhere in the UK or Islands of the UK solely for the purpose of attending the course. Temporary absences from the UK, such as travel, will not prevent an applicant from being eligible.
You must also be a new student - you will not qualify if you already hold a Masters degree (regardless of how it was funded or whether it was achieved outside the UK).
Following the UK's exit from the EU, EU nationals who are assessed as eligible to receive the Postgraduate Loan will continue to receive this loan for the duration of their course.

(3)Which courses qualify for a PGL?
All subjects qualify under this scheme. Eligible Masters courses include the following:
MSc (Master of Science)
MA (Master of Arts)
MPhil (Master of Philosophy) on entry ie only if this is not undertaken as an integral part of a postgraduate Doctoral degree
MRes (Master of Research) on entry ie only if this is not undertaken as an integral part of a postgraduate Doctoral degree
LLM (Master of Laws)
Ineligible courses include:
Postgraduate Doctoral degrees
Masters degrees undertaken as an integral part of a postgraduate Doctoral degree
Postgraduate Certificates (PgCert) and Postgraduate Diplomas (PgDip)
PGLs are available for study at any UK university with degree awarding powers or an alternative authority funded Higher Education provider with degree awarding powers. A full-time course must be a maximum of two years long and a part-time course a maximum of four years.

(4)How do loan repayments work?
PGLs will be repayable from April after course completion, from April 2019. So if you undertake a one-year programme in the 2016-17 academic year, you will have a year’s break before you become liable for repayments in April 2019.
The loan is income-contingent so you will only be liable to make repayments once you are earning at least £21,000 a year. You will repay 6% of your income above £21,000 plus interest at the current RPI (Retail Prices Index), plus an additional 3%.
If you will also be repaying an undergraduate loan, which is repayable at 9% of income above £21,000 a year, your combined loan repayments will total 15% of income above £21,000.
If you are repaying from overseas, the repayment threshold will be based on the cost of living in your country of residence.
