International Foundation Programme:
To start the IFP in September, and in order to meet new visa requirements, you will need to have completed your secondary school education and have a UKVI IELTS with a minimum score of 4.5 overall with no less than 4.0 in all areas (speaking, listening, reading, writing). In order to meet new visa requirements, your IELTS must be the UKVI IELTS taken at a UKVI-approved test centre.
If you are considering the fast-track option, we strongly recommend an IELTS equivalent of 5.0 or above.

We may accept other high school English qualifications if you are applying for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree (not the International Foundation Programme or Graduate Diploma/Certificate), please contact Admissions for clarification if required.
Please note that English Language tests results are usually only accepted if they have been achieved in the last two years.
If you do not meet the entry requirements detailed above, you may be eligible to join our International Foundation Programme, Graduate Diploma orGraduate Certificate. These courses are specifically designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary for undergraduate (International Foundation Programme) or postgraduate (Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate) study. We also offer Pre-sessional programmes in the Summer for students that need to improve their English language level prior to the start of their programme. These programmes can be taken instead of re-taking an English test if you don't quite meet the required levels listed above.

*Important Update – April 2015
On April 6th 2015 the UKVI introduced new English language guidance for International students requiring Tier 4 immigration permission to study in the UK. The changes may affect the following groups of students:
Students who are coming to study a Pre-Sessional English course before starting a degree programme.
Students who are coming to study the International Foundation Programme.
If you have applied for one of the above courses, then you will require an approved English language test, (SELT - Secure English Language Test).
If you took a SELT test before the 6th April 2015 and have achieved the appropriate score to enter the Pre-sessional, International Foundation Certificate or Pre-masters programmes, then you are not affected by this change.
If you took a SELT test on or after the 6th April 2015, then you must take IELTS at an UKVI approved test centre in the UK or overseas.
If you are coming to study an undergraduate or postgraduate programme then you are NOT affected by this change and we will continue to accept all of the tests listed in the table above (including IELTS taken at all test centres).

Types of English Language Qualifications considered by the University of Northampton
We accept various qualifications from overseas, as well as a range of English language tests. We also consider Pre-sessional English programmes taken at other UK institutions, providing we are satisfied that the programme meets our minimum English language entry requirements.
If you have successfully completed a degree or postgraduate diploma taught in English in a majority native English speaking country, you will not usually need to provide other evidence of English language ability.
The minimum levels required in the most commonly presented English tests are detailed in our Comparison of English language test scores. Please note that, in assessing whether you have sufficient English language to successfully complete your course, we consider these qualifications alongside other evidence of English language ability included in your application, for example in the personal statement. Some courses do not accept certain qualifications, or ask for higher levels of achievement. Where this is the case, it will be made clear on our Course Information pages.

SELT and non SELTs
If you are interested in studying a course at NQF Level 5 (pre-degree level) or lower, you will be required to hold a UKVI approved English Language Test (SELT) in order to get a Tier 4 student visa.
Other qualifications that are not SELTs cannot be used in applications for a Tier 4 student visa to study either our Pre-sessional English programme (PEP) or our International Foundation Programme, but can be used in visa applications to study a degree or Masters course.
Academic IELTS exams and IELTS for UKVI exams follow the same grading scale but they are different. Academic IELTS is not a SELT, but IELTS for UKVI is a SELT. This means that Academic IELTS cannot be used to obtain a Tier 4 visa to attend a full-time English course, however it can still be used to obtain a Tier 4 visa for degree courses at the University.

To study at UEL you must demonstrate that your English level is at the standard for university study. We accept a number of different English language qualifications / tests for entry onto our courses, with IELTS being the most common. English language requirements vary slightly from course to course. All students are required to meet our standard English language requirements.
Pre-sessional English – We are currently not offering Pre-sessional English courses, therefore we recommend that you take one of the below qualifications to meet our requirements

Undergraduate standard requirements
The English language requirements for undergraduate (Bachelor) courses is a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 or 6, or equivalent, depending on the course and year or level of entry.
Postgraduate standard requirements
The English language entry requirements for the majority of postgraduate (Masters) programmes is a minimum IELTS 6.0 or 6.5, or equivalent, depending on your chosen course of study.
