Kamran Djam Scholarships
Thanks to the generosity of the Fereydoun Djam Charitable Trust there are a number of Kamran Djam scholarships available for UK/EU and Overseas fee-paying SOAS students, providing a contribution towards fees of up to a maximum of ￡13,000 each year for the duration of the award. The MPhil/PhD scholarship is paid for 3 years. The MA is paid for one year (or two years if part-time). The Undergraduate scholarship is paid for one year.

Candidate Criteria
Applicants for the BA scholarships must expect to be awarded a first class Honours Degree. Applicants who expect an upper second class degree may also apply, but will not be given preference.
Applicants for the MA Scholarships must possess or expect to be awarded a First Class Honours Degree or equivalent. Applicants with a non UK masters degree must be in the top rank as evidenced by references and transcripts. Applicants with a 2.1 may also apply but will not be given preference.
Applicants for the MPhil/PhD scholarships must possess or expect to be awarded a masters degree with a mark of Distinction from a UK university. Applicants with a non UK masters degree must be in the top rank as evidenced by references and transcripts. Applicants with a mark of merit may also apply but will not be given preference.
Applicants for the MPhil/PhD scholarships must have demonstrated in the research proposal of their application for admission that their research is in one of the following subject areas: Persian Language, Persian Literature, Iranian History
The scholarship is open to UK/EU and overseas fee-paying full time students.
In order to be considered for the MPhil/PhD & MA scholarships, applicants must have an offer of admission to a Research programme or to the MA Iranian Studies at SOAS by the scholarship application deadline.
Applicants must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2017. If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible.

Candidate Assessment
Candidates will be assessed on academic merit by a Selection Panel consisting of three academic members.
The assessment will be based on the information in your application. Selectors will be looking at degree results, academic references, statement of intent and full research proposal (for MPhil/PhD applicants), and other relevant information.
Notification of Results
Successful candidates will be notified by the end of July. If you have not heard from us by the end of July, you should assume that your application was unsuccessful.
Scholarship application deadline
Scholarship applications must be received no later than 17:00 (UK local time) on 3 May 2017.
In order to be considered for the MPhil/PhD & MA scholarships, you must ALSO submit a complete online application to your programme. Please note that complete applications for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year. You should prepare to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods. It is recommended to apply for the programme about six weeks BEFORE the scholarship deadline (that is, by 22 March 2017)

Scholarship Application Procedures
Applicants should follow the following steps:
STEP 1: Apply for the scholarship by 17:00 (UK local time) on 3 May 2017
You must apply for this scholarship via this on-line scholarship application form.
Applicants for the BA scholarships only: In addition to the on-line scholarship application form, you will also need two references. Please send the reference form to each of your referees together with a copy of your completed scholarship application form. The reference form is available for download from the download box at the top right.
STEP 2: Apply for your programme
In addition to the online scholarship application, applicants for the MPhil/PhD and MA scholarships only must submit a COMPLETE on-line application for admission and have an offer of admission to a Research programme or to the MA Iranian Studies at SOAS by the scholarship application deadline.
A complete application for admission includes transcripts, an explanation of the grading system for any degrees obtained outside of the UK, two references, CV and a personal statement. In addition to this, MPhil/PHD applicants must submit research proposal. The panel will be considering your scholarship application TOGETHER with your online application for admission. Please note that complete applications for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year. You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.

SOAS ROOTS fieldwork awards
Two SOAS ROOTS fieldwork awards valued at ￡750 each will be available in the academic year 2016-17 and will enable two undergraduate students to undertake approved fieldwork in the field of Mande music.
The awards have been made possible by the involvement of the SOAS Music Department in the remaking of the ground-breaking TV series ‘ROOTS’ which received international acclaim for its portrayal of the slave trade from West Africa to America in the 18th and 19th Century. As the leading scholar of Mande music, Dr Lucy Duran, Senior Lecturer in African Music, was enlisted as advisor on the Mandinka music, language and customs which feature heavily in the show.
These awards are intended to enable SOAS students to carry out field or archival research into Mande music at Undergraduate level.
Scholarship Criteria
- Open to current full-time SOAS undergraduate research students from the Department of Music with an independent study project in the field of Mande music
- Recipients of the scholarship may be asked to contribute to promotional activity surrounding the ‘ROOTS’ broadcast, for example their research proposal and/or results may be featured in an accompanying documentary, produced by the History Channel

Undergraduate Research Awards
Six awards valued at ￡516.66 each will be made available to support full time undergraduates with the costs of an Independent Study Project (ISP).
An ISP is a one unit value course assessed by a 10,000 word essay on an approved topic of the student's choice and may be based on original fieldwork (abroad or in the UK), the critical analysis of documents and/or statistical materials, or may be an original synthesis of material derived from secondary sources.
The research to be supported by this award must be conducted in the vacation - normally the summer vacation of the preceding year.
Students applying for an Undergraduate Vacation Research Award must be registered full-time at SOAS for an Undergraduate Degree and not for a language year abroad.
The Advisory Panel on Undergraduate Vacation Research Awards is not normally prepared to meet the cost of travel to the home country of an overseas applicant and will do so only in exceptional circumstances.

Sri Aurobindo Trust Travel Awards
The Sri Aurobindo Trust will make three travel awards available to undergraduate students with a strong interest in Modern Indian Philosophy and the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. The awards will be available to 2nd year students who are taking a three year BA or 2nd /3rd year students who are taking a four year joint honours BA.
The awards will be used to fund students to attend an intensive field study trip to Auroville and Pondicherry in south-east India. This trip will enable attendees to deepen their knowledge of the theoretical practices of the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo of which they will have a keen understanding. Through visiting the locations where Sri Aurobindo was first practised, participants will be able to experience for themselves the communities and inspiring spiritual traditions which have grown from his teachings and are still lived today.
The 2017 field study trip will last ten days and will take place in late August/early September. Students will be expected to complete a post-trip report detailing their experiences and impact on their understanding and appreciation of Modern Indian Philosophy.
Each award will provide ￡1,000, which will be disbursed to award holders by the Scholarships Office by early May. This may be used towards travel to and from the programme by the specified start date (in late August or early September) as well as for incidental costs. In addition to this, room and board will be covered during the dates of the programme and arranged directly by the Sri Aurobindo Trust.

*Please note that some preference will be given to students who have already taken/are currently taking the module in Modern Indian Philosophy and/or who are completing degrees in the Department of Religions and Philosophies.
First year undergraduate students in 2016-17 or final year students in 2016-17 are not eligible.
Candidate Criteria
Candidates must have:
Received a 2:1 or a first in academic year 2015-16 (or in academic year 2014-15 for those applicants who were in their year abroad in 2015-16). However, some preference will be given to students who have received a first. IMPORTANT: Please note that awards will be subject to candidates having successfully completed all the course requirements in Term 1 and 2 of 2016-17 with overall marks of 2.1 or above. The Scholarships Office will check the award holder’s results late April before the awards are confirmed.
Demonstrated academic, extra curricular or personal interest in the study of religions and/or topic of the programme
Motivation for taking part in the field study trip, clear objectives for what you will gain from the programme (academically, personally, etc.) and how you will apply these upon your return to the UK

The application will be assessed by a Selection Panel consisting of three academic members and will be based on:
Academic merit and progress
Demonstrated academic, extra curricular or personal interest in the study of religions and philosophies and/or topic of the programme
Motivation for taking part in the field study trip, clear objectives about what you will gain from the programme (academically, personally, etc.) and how you will apply these upon your return to the UK
Scholarship Application Deadline
Scholarship Applications must be received no later than 17:00 (UK local time) on 27 April 2017 (extended from 28 February 2017).
Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
Notifications of Results
Successful candidates will be notified early April. Please note that awards will be subject to candidates having successfully completed all the course requirements in Term 1 and 2 of 2016-17 with overall marks of 2.1 or above. If you have not heard from us by mid-April, you should assume that your application was unsuccessful.
