International Freshman English Proficiency
English language proficiency is critical to your success at the University of Utah. English proficiency may be demonstrated by freshman applicants in one of the following ways:
Approved English Proficienct Exams
iBT/TOEfl:80 or above
IELTS: 6.5 or above
Cambridge: minimum score of CPE or CAE
HKDSE: minimum score of 4 or above
PTE: minimum score of 54 or above
Password: minimum score of5 or above
EIKEN: minimum score of 1
TOEIC: minimum score of 695 or above
Pearson Versant: minimum score of 69 or above
GCSE/IGCSE: minimum score of B
CEFR: minimum score of C1+
*Test date must be within two years of application for scores to be valid
The following applicants do not need to submit proof of English proficiency, however all freshman applicants must submit an official test score to complete their application. If a student is not required to demonstrate English proficiency, they must submit an ACT or SAT score.
Other Ways to Demonstrate English Proficiency
Students who attended at least 2.5 years and graduated, or will graduate, from a U.S. or U.S. Regionally Accredited High School, or completed a U.S. GED
Native speakers of English who are citizens of Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland)
How to Send your Test Scores Officially
Please have your scores sent electronically to the University of Utah Office of Admissions. You can do this by using the following Codes:
SAT Code: 4853
ACT Code: 4274
TOEFL Code:4853
IELTS: Please contact your testing center and have them send your results directly to the University of Utah Office of Admissions
All other approved scores will need to be sent to 4853

Graduate English Proficiency
English language proficiency is critical to your success at the University of Utah. Please note that individual departments may have English proficiency requirements that are different than those listed below. Applicants are advised to verify their program specific requirements and note that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission in to a graduate program.
English proficiency may be demonstrated by graduate applicants in one of the following ways:
TOEFL: minimum score of 80 (Internet-based test) or 550 (paper-based test)
IELTS: An overall minimum band score of 6.5
An associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. college or university completed within two years of admittance
A bachelor’s degree or higher completed within the last two years from an officially-recognized college or university in one of the following countries:
Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland)
*All test dates must be within two years of admission for scores to be valid.
The following applicants do not need to submit proof of English proficiency:
Native speakers of English who are citizens of Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland)
Continuing students currently enrolled at the University of Utah and moving from one degree level to another, or one program to another (with a break of no more than two years between the 'change' from one degree level/program to the next)

International Transfer Students English Proficiency
English language proficiency is critical to your success at the University of Utah. English proficiency may be demonstrated by transfer applicants in one of the following ways:
TOEFL: minimum score of 80 (Internet-based test) or 550 (paper-based test)
IELTS: An overall minimum band score of 6.5
*All test dates must be within two years of application for scores to be valid.
Receive a grade of “C” or better in a college-level English Composition course (equivalent to WRTG 1010 – Intro to Academic Writing at the U or WRTG 2010 – Intermediate Writing: Academic Writing & Research) at a regionally-accredited U.S. college or university
An associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. college or university completed within two years of admittance
The following applicants do not need to submit proof of English proficiency:
Native speakers of English who are citizens of Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland.)
Continuing students currently enrolled at the University of Utah and moving from one degree level to another, or one program to another (with a break of no more than two years between the 'change' from one degree level/program to the next)
