    Since its establishment in 1986, POSTECH has stayed true to its role in Korean higher education as a pioneer in science and technology research. Located in the city of Pohang, the 400-acre, park-like campus is home to the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory and minutes away from POSCO, the fourth-largest steelmaking company in the world. POSTECH has come a long way in its short history to become globally recognized as one of Asia’s premier universities and among the most selective, highly ranked research universities in Korea.
    The founding principle behind POSTECH’s establishment lies in providing a student-centered education in a highly collaborative and intimate academic community. The university’s undergraduate program is made up of 11 departments (4 science and 7 engineering) and 1 division. POSTECH selects 20 groups by evaluating their competitiveness, academic excellence, commercialization possibility and multidisciplinary and allocate 2~3 extra professor positions besides the department's quota with financial support.     Asia’s Top Research Achievements
    With the number of SCI papers per faculty member reaching over 6.8 per year, the number of citations per paper exceeding 14.71 and the number of SCI Impact Factor per paper 4.71 in 2015, POSTECH’s research performance has been regarded as one of the best in Asia and has spurred the corresponding growth of the university’s intellectual properties in quantity.     Conducting World-Leading Research
    POSTECH aspires to become one of the world’s best in selected research areas in science and engineering such as next-generation materials. Complemented by excellent research institutes and infrastructures that are second-to-none in Asia including the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, the Max Plank Korea/POSTECH, the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics, the Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology and the National Institute of Nanomaterials Technology, POSTECH seeks new breakthroughs in basic and applied research that can advance the world.POSTECH strives to conduct venturous and creative research in basic sciences. Four research centers of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), which was recently established by the Korean government to promote world-class research in basic sciences, are located at POSTECH.     Promoting Academia-Industry Cooperation and Start-Up Ventures
    With Pioneering and excellent research, POSTECH is leading the innovative technology development that the industry needs and also implementing a new academia-industry cooperation system in Korea based on a mutually-beneficial long-term partnership between the university and industry. Also, by organizing the Association of POSTECH Grown Companies (APGC), which consists of over 50 venture companies founded by university members and alumni, POSTECH actively promotes the creation and growth of start-up ventures by supporting entrepreneurs with practical help such as entrepreneurship education/training, venture mentoring, angel funding and management consultation. To spread entrepreneurship to the members, POSTECH is providing programs and services that can produce new core patents and strategies such as Technology Trand Analysis and IP Portfolio. POSTECH also established Business Development Team to deal with technology transfer, patent registration, patent application and start-up.
    Establishing POSTECH’s Culture in Research
    POSTECH is running its own special programs to promote research culture. ‘Let me introduce my research!’, which is one of the most prominent, is a program that any member of POSTECH(undergraduate, graduate, professor, staff, researcher) introduces his/her research or work for 3 minutes as easily as any non-majored audience can understand. Also there are Research sharing video relay(newly appinted professors explain thier research and expected collaborationable feilds for 1 minute), Research Group Meeting(consisted with researchers from more than 2 or 4 fields) and Research Idea Contest (discovers research ideas with unexpectable possibilities and high impacts). With these programs, POSTECH fosters reserach culture that researchers from different fields communicate and share ideas without boundaries.

    Pohang Light Source (PLS-II):The 3rd generation light source at POSTECH is the 5th in the world and the only synchrotron radiation accelerator in Korea. This national research facility, the heart of Korea’s cutting-edge science, enables studies on various structural characteristics of materials using light. The facility is utilized in various basic science to high-tech industrial research. Its performance improvement to PLS-II was successfully completed in 2012. Thousands of users visit yearly to conduct their research using PLS-ll.
    4th Generation Light Source (PAL-XFEL):The 4th generation light source (PAL-XFEL), which is operational from 2016, is 10 billion times brighter than the 3rd generation light source. PAL-XFEL will generate new knowledge and discoveries in almost all technical and scientific disciplines including medicine, pharmaceutics, chemistry, material science, nanotechnology, power engineering and electronics.
    Max Planck POSTECH/Korea Research Initiative:The Max Planck Society of Germany and POSTECH established two Max Planck Centers at POSTECH: the Max Planck-POSTECH Center for Attosecond Science and the Max Planck-POSTECH Center for Complex Phase Materials.This collaboration is not only a testament to POSTECH’s internationally renowned research excellence but, with the introduction of advanced research institute operation and management methods, also lays a foundation for the further strengthening Korea’s competitiveness in basic science research.
    C5 (Creative?Collaborative?Cultivating?Convergence?Center):C5 plays a pivotal role in catalyzing world-first convergence education and research and fostering future global leaders with a creative and challenging spirit. C5 was named after Creative, Collaborative, Cultivating, Convergence and Center. C5 has 7-stories with a size of 16,000 square meters per floor. The construction of C5 came at an investment of 31.5 billion won. Construction began in October 2013 and its inauguration ceremony was held on January 30, 2015.
    POSTECH Biotechnology Center (PBC):The POSTECH Biotech Center was founded in 2000 with the goal of becoming the hub of biotechnology research and business development (R&BD). The primary goal of the POSTECH Biotech Center is to incubate disruptive technologies in biotechnology areas for the development of immunology, pharmaceuticals and nanobiotechnology. The Center has been participating actively in academia-industry collaboration both nationally and internationally.
    National Institute for Nanomaterials Technology (NINT):The National Institute for Nanomaterials Technology, a core research center for advancement and commercialization of nanotechnology, is developing the next-generation semiconductor and display materials.With its cutting-edge facilities, the Institute provides valuable technical support and assistance to industry, from research and development to commercialization. The Institute also supports and enables POSTECH researchers to actively carry out nanotechnology and other related areas.

    Dormitory Guides
    All current student at POSTECH can reside in dormitories as long as there are no grounds for disqualification.First and second year undergraduates must reside in the RC (Residential College) dormitory.Third and fourth year undergraduates and graduate students can reside in regular dormitories. Married graduate students can either reside in graduate student apartments or off-campus housing if desired.POSTECH operates a total of 24 dormitories: 20 for male students, 3 for female students, and 1 RC dormitory. Each dormitory room accommodates 2 people.Regular dormitory: 3-5 story buildings, and each dormitory has a lounge, a laundry room, and a shower room.RC dormitory: A snack room is located on each floor and each room has a bathroom with shower. Wired and wireless internet access is available in all dormitories.The RC dormitory is where students can receive a customized education for their talent and reside with their academic advisors. Students in RC can participate in the ‘RC COLLOQUIA’ program which includes team projects, physical activities, voluntary services, field trips, and cultural performances. In addition, the RC dormitory provides students with leadership development programs.Dormitory Bldg #16 is called DICE (Dormitory for International Cultural Exchange), an English-speaking building, and students can reside here via an interview with the professor in charge.

    Optical Shop:A small store for eyewear is located on the ground floor of the center and is open from 9:30 am to 9:00 pm.(every Sunday: 11:30 am to 9:00 pm).
    POSTECH Souvenir Shop:From sweat shirts and hats to pens and desk clocks, the souvenir shop offers a wide range of gifts. The store is open during the following hours :Monday to Saturday: 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.Every first and third Sunday: 11:30 am to 09:00 pm.Every second and fourth Sunday: Closed.

    Admission Officer System
    POSTECH adopted the admission officer system, away from the existing score-oriented admission system involving the college scholastic ability test and grades on the transcript, in an effort to select an excellent and talented class in accordance with POSTECH’s nature and founding principles. It was in 2009 (from the student newly enrolled in 2010) when for the first time all students in Korea began to be selected by the admission officer system. To single out creative students with passion and potential in math and science, the applicant’s talents had to be evaluated in a multi-faceted assessment through diversifying evaluation factors such as the transcript of the student’s school records, a letter of recommendation and school life. Not only the ability in studying, POSTECH takes into account other factors such as growth potential, latent ability and personality, with tireless effort.
    High-Potential Youth Development Program
    In order to serve the objective of the admission officer system and to contribute to end private education fever, from 2009, POSTECH has been running the “High-Potential Youth Development Program,” which could provide educational opportunities to students who had difficulty to receive appropriate training due to an underprivileged environment in spite of their passion for math and science. This program operates twice a year during summer and winter vacation; participating students stay in a dorm at POSTECH and participate in intensive training for the subjects of math and sciences from POSTECH professors. All costs are covered by POSTECH.
    Integrated Talent Foster Program without Boundaries among Departments
    In addition to helping take courses in other departments easily via basic STC (Science & Technology Core) program, this program aims to encourage each student to take double major and minor so that each individual can broaden the realm of learning.
    Entrepreneurship Training
    Centered by the Industrial & Management Engineering Department, a new entrepreneurship education program together with other departments is currently under development. In addition, school-wide support is being systemized, which includes ENP-like club activities, organization of a pre-start-up office, patent education, leave of absence for start-up creation and so forth.
    Residential College Program
    Following in POSTECH’s tradition to provide all students with on-campus housing since its founding, the Residential College Program has been conducted since 2008 with the intention to let residence halls serve the function as an education space, not just as accommodation. Through this, it is expected that individuals’ personalities and potential are expressed to the fullest through strengthening extra-curricular educational programs such as personality education and that significant contribution is made for freshman and sophomore undergraduate students to adapt early on to campus life and to become inspired in an academic atmosphere.
    English Certification Program
    POSTECH puts a lot of effort into helping students master the English language, which is at the core of preparing global talents in science and technology. In 2008, a five-step English certification program was introduced and since then, has been operated to provide a custom-tailored English education befitting the English level of each individual.
    Lectures in English in Major Subjects
    Since 2010, POSTECH has extended the portion of lectures given in English with the goal to conduct all lectures for major subjects 100% in English, except for Humanities and prerequisite subjects. As of 2012, the portion reached 81.5% for undergraduate programs and 92.2% for graduate programs. With exceptions like some subjects for which English may hinder academic achievement by the nature of the subject, or when an English lecture is ineffective, measures are taken for lectures in all subjects to be delivered completely in English.
    Activity-based General Education Curriculum
    In an effort to embody the holistic education of students, since 2011, POSTECH has run the Activity-based General Education Curriculum, which includes – “Campus life and future design” (1st semester, 1st year, mandatory) that deals with topics such as goal setting and self-management, needed to enter into campus life. “Freshman Seminar” (2nd semester, 1st year, mandatory) helps students enter into academia by inspiring intellectual curiosity and desire for study in small discussion seminars with about 10 members of students and professors. Through these educational programs, it is expected that students, as balanced global leaders, can improve their capacity including leadership, personality and creativity.
