二、香港城市大學的歷史
1980年11月，港督尤德爵士(Sir Edward Youde)委任了一個檢討香港專上及工業(yè)教育委員會。該委員會在1981年6月建議，為了適應時代發(fā)展，香港應全面加強專上教育，立即展開第二間理工學院的籌劃工作。
1982年6月，香港理工學院校董會成員獲委任為第二間理工學院的籌備委員會成員，并正式委任鐘士元爵士為籌備委員會的主席。
1982年5月，"大學及理工資助委員會"在倫敦召開第一次會議，隨后提交《第二理工學院第一號報告書》，建議新理工學院命名為"香港城市理工學院"(City Polytechnic of Hong Kong)，并認為新理工的校址應參考英國的做法，設于 人口稠密、主要交通網(wǎng)絡可達到的地區(qū)，在九龍?zhí)烈环s12公頃的土地上建設永久校舍。委員會同時決定應盡早在1984–85年度于臨時校舍內(nèi)開課，以待永久校舍的落成。
1983年初在全球展開招聘首任院長的工作，英國盧保路科技大學(Loughborough University of Technology)首席副校長莊賢智教授(Professor David Johns)獲委任為首任院長。
1984年根據(jù)《香港法例》第1132章"香港城市理工學院條例"于九龍旺角成立香港城市理工學院。最早期的校舍位于今日旺角的工業(yè)貿(mào)易署大樓。
九龍?zhí)劣忠淮暹_之路的永久校舍落成后，于1990年起陸續(xù)遷入新校舍，并把原校舍轉交香港公開進修學院作校舍用途。學校獲得政府撥地，把原歌和老街臨時房屋區(qū)的地段作為未來學生宿舍的位址。
1995年獲政府授予自我評審(self-accrediting)資格，并正名為"香港城市大學"。
1997年，在原威靈頓中學舊址設立九龍灣分校，專門為自資副學士、展翅計劃及毅進計劃的學生提供上課地點。
2014年11月1日，舉辦慶祝建校30周年活動，成立"香港城市大學基金"。
