誤區(qū)1:簡單粗暴地羅列經歷 。
很多人覺得在PS里把經歷寫的越多越能表現(xiàn)出自己的個性,所以把自認為亮眼的經歷都搬進了PS里,導致結構冗長,平淡無奇,從招生老師的角度上來說,大概率情況下人家對你的這些故事并不感興趣。他們想從里面看到什么?肯定是你的能力、素質、潛力、熱情等等,在篩選經歷的時候就應該根據(jù) 這些要求來進行。而且堆砌經歷有一個很大的缺點就是沒有突出重點,整篇看上去很平淡,讓人很難記住。
誤區(qū)2:空有觀點,沒有事實/空有事實,沒有細節(jié)
在寫作PS的時候,幾乎每個人都會描述自己的觀點。這里有個很容易犯的錯誤就是表達觀點不帶事例。PS其實就是說服別人選擇你,但如果只是表達觀點,是很難讓別人信服的,在描述自身的學習經歷和能力的時候,要用真東西說話,數(shù)據(jù)、獎狀等都是佐證。。我們來自于UCL的導師謝學長特別強調,在寫PS時要保持真實性和專業(yè)性。他的原話是這樣的“when working in a PS, we should be true and academic. Being true means whatever experience showing on your essay should be relevant to the applicant. Some opinion are inciting students to make up stories to enrich their PS. Actually, this kind of behavior can be taken as cheating which may result in serious outcomes. Being academic means the paper should be logic enough. I have noticed that some students just are simply putting sentences together lack of coherence and cohesion. I suggest a good PS should convince the reader that the applicant is capable to finish the study.”
誤區(qū)3:邏輯混亂。
邏輯是一篇PS的載體,邏輯混亂的PS導師是沒有欲望讀下去的,我們的謝導師在為學生修改PS時就碰到過這種情況“ There was a student, just like what she wants to be-- a design, her structure from the macroscopic view is amazingly good whereas when shifted to the microscopic view, that was terrible. I guess the first reason result in her essay’s failure would be her vocabulary. Some of her English expressions really confused me. For example, she used immense processing power to describe huge amount of calculation of computers. If we follow her expression, we could understand as something like a computer owns the ability to do processing very quickly. Considering that context, immense processing could be fine enough. The second reason is her informality of language. When I read her English, I could obviously observed that many of sentences were more like oral convey instead of academic English. The last contribution, I estimated, is her poor attitude. Although I can sniff her delicate plan of her future; her impressive ambition; her capability of being a excellent designer, her academic result is bad. According to her deion, maybe, she has not obtain her degree as other ordinary students do. Probably, this is the exact reason that she says she does not want to live a ordinary life”
試想一下,如果你連PS寫作的邏輯都理不清楚,招生官又憑什么相信你有足夠的邏輯思維去做研究呢?
誤區(qū)4:套用模板
我們經常碰到有同學上來就找我們要模板,想通過我們的模板來判定我們的實力,小A能理解。如果拿我們優(yōu)秀的模板拿去稍加修改就當成自己的,那么小A只有一個表情
寫PS就像把妹,有套路就能得手嗎?肯定不是,比起套路,誠心更重要。一份好的PS必須要有靈魂,而靈魂就來自與申請者獨特的個性。我們的導師就極力反對使用模板,在和導師進行討論時,導師是這樣告訴我的“what I want and wanted to show is my special characters, my stubborn to follow my ideas; my courage to insist my opinions; my talents to change the status quo. So, if I were given the chance to DIY my PS, I would definitely ignore all of structures on Google, instead, I would use my own tricks to hook the reader.”
誤區(qū)5:過度包裝自己。
導師們喜歡什么樣的學生?就像你在個人陳述中想要塑造的這種樣子:關鍵詞是:領導力,謙虛,成熟,有目標導向的做事風格,勤奮工作的個人品質,有良好思維和觀點,聰明,有創(chuàng)意。記住承認自己并不完美是可以的,但重要的是要能夠認識并從錯誤和失敗中吸取教訓。你應該避免在個人形象或在個人陳述中寫這些內容:傲慢,自負,競爭心太強,完美主義者,盲目雄心勃勃,過度書寫,行事不端,判斷不切實際。
最后提醒一點,能給招生官留下一個深刻印象的個人陳述,一定是一篇新穎,有趣,別出心裁的個人陳述。
