這是《經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)人》2016年4月份的一篇文章，主題關(guān)于轉(zhuǎn)基因食物：
AFTER years of fierce debate in China about whether to allow widespread growing of genetically modified (GM) food crops, a strong signal emerged in 2013 that the leadership wanted to push ahead. It was given in a speech on agricultural policy by President Xi Jinping. In it he recounted his own experience of hunger during China's great famine in the early 1960s. He also recalled lean times later that decade during the Cultural Revolution when he went months without "seeing the tiniest drop of oil" or "knowing the taste of meat". He said that guaranteeing China's "food security" was still a serious worry. Hinting at what he saw as a possible remedy, he said China must "occupy the commanding heights of transgenic technology" and not yield that ground to "big foreign firms".
其中生詞的部分為：

2)lean：a lean period is a very difficult time because there is not enough money, business etc. 不景氣的

除此之外，這個(gè)段落里面每一句都有很精彩的表達(dá)。
比如，第一句話AFTER years of fierce debate in China about whether to allow widespread growing of genetically modified (GM) food crops, a strong signal emerged in 2013 that the leadership wanted to push ahead.這一句表達(dá)有爭議，而“……一直是人們爭論的話題”這個(gè)開頭在TE的文章中很常見，在我們的日常寫作中也很常用。
要表達(dá)“話題、爭論焦點(diǎn)”還有很多說法，例子：
(1)The growth of genetically modified (GM) food crops in China has always been a topic in the limelight. (limelight:聚光燈)
(2)When it comes to the growth of genetically modified (GM) food crops in China, opinions vary.
所以，未來當(dāng)我們想文章開頭，就可以用到這樣的結(jié)構(gòu)來開始論證。
而第二個(gè)想和大家分享的句子是：He also recalled lean times later that decade during the Cultural Revolution when he went months without "seeing the tiniest drop of oil" or "knowing the taste of meat".
lean times: 這個(gè)lean用的很巧妙，讓人很容易聯(lián)想到“青黃不接的歲月”。這種獨(dú)具匠心的搭配大家要注意仔細(xì)推敲，以后寫作時(shí)可以使用;When 這里是定語從句的部分，接的很恰當(dāng);go months without …經(jīng)歷時(shí)間卻未遇到或者做到某事，暗含一種無奈，如果我們想表達(dá)某種行業(yè)不流行了，可以用這樣的表達(dá)。
E.g. In the current age , a post officer may go years without getting any job owing to the fact that the days of the industry are numbered .
第三個(gè)句子要分享的是：He said China must "occupy the commanding heights of transgenic technology" and not yield that ground to "big foreign firms".
這個(gè)句子中有很多很好的表達(dá)，比如occupy the commanding heights of: 占據(jù)……的高地，如果我們在表達(dá)時(shí)想要表現(xiàn)職業(yè)精神的時(shí)候，可以這樣說：Any athletes who want to make a difference must occupy the commanding heights of the sports field.
