看到這道題，也許英語還不錯(cuò)的同學(xué)都會(huì)開始鄙視ETS了。這個(gè)fine 大概上小學(xué)一年級(jí)小學(xué)生也能認(rèn)識(shí)吧?？墒?，瀏覽完選項(xiàng)，又猶豫了。因?yàn)檫x項(xiàng)中實(shí)在找不到一個(gè)“好”相關(guān)的單詞啊。難道要優(yōu)雅地選elegant嗎?可是答案真的不是啊。要正確理解，我們只能回歸原文：
A piece of first-year ice will taste salty. Eventually, if the ice survives, these pockets of brine drain out through fine, veinlike channels, and the ice becomes fresher; multiyear ice can even be melted and drunk.
這里的fine 在句子中很明顯修飾了名詞 channel(通道)，限定channel 這個(gè)詞的還有前面動(dòng)詞drain, 其解釋為flow off gradually(慢慢地滲出)呢，那么從什么樣的通道里才能“慢慢地滲”出去呢，必定是“小”的通道吧。所以答案就選small嘍。
讓我們看看官方解釋是怎樣的：
“Fine” appears in the context of an explanation of how the brine drains out; in such a context, it must be being used to describe a physical characteristic of the channels. In addition, the word “Eventually” implies that the draining is a slow process. Only Choice E, “small,” helps to explain why the process is slow and is therefore the best choice. None of the other choices contributes to the explanation.
另外，換個(gè)角度看語境，channel 這個(gè)詞還有另一個(gè)限定詞呢，那就是“veinlike”(像血管一樣的)，像血管一樣的必然也可以理解為細(xì)小的呢。
