1、過去某時(shí)正發(fā)生的事情
What were you doing yesterday at seven p. m. ?
2、在一個(gè)句子里，過去進(jìn)行時(shí)常與一般過去時(shí)連用，此時(shí)，進(jìn)行時(shí)表示較長的正在進(jìn)行的動(dòng)作，而一般時(shí)表示較短暫的動(dòng)作或事情
The phone rang while I was having my bath.
When she arrived, I was telephoning Harry.
When she arrived, I telephoned Harry. (到后做)
The reporter said that the UFO was traveling to west when he saw it.
3、可用while強(qiáng)調(diào)同時(shí)進(jìn)行的兩種或幾種動(dòng)作
While I was working in the garden, my wife was cooking dinner.
