Sports Students Should Be Enrolled
It becomes more and more common that many universities, especially those famous ones, lowertheir academic standards to enroll students who have special athletic talents. Some people hold astrong objection to it while the rest contend it acceptable and reasonable. As far as I'm concerned,I fully appreciate this policy.
First of all, all students are granted an equal chance to access to higher education, while academicscores are not the only yardstick that matters. High academic scores are rarely seen in thosesports talents, since nearly all of them devote their early school years to tough and arduoustraining. In the course of physical exercise, the spirit of diligence and perseverance is observed, which is no different from that of their peers at school. Thus they should be awarded anopportunity to the ivory tower in spite of their poor scores in entrance examinations. Universitiescan help these students actualize their dreams to become a knowledgeable person. Also thoseuniversities may supply athletic students with better conditions to improve their sportsperformance.
Furthermore, it is also very helpful for universities to build their fame and strengthen theircompetitiveness in sports games. Competition between universities is extensive, so most famousuniversities pay attention not only to academic researches but also to many other aspects, forexample, arts and sports. Good athletic scores can improve the fame of the universities, which inturn can attract more excellent new comers. And those sports talents may also play an importantrole in piquing other students’ interest in sports. All these help to sharpen the competitive edges ofuniversities.
Last but not least, taking in sports talents may help to relax the tension of exclusive concern withscores in current society. With college entrance exam getting more and more demanding, schoolchildren have suffered more pressure from the high expectation of teachers and parents. However, the new practice of taking in sports students has shown another direction for bothparents and children. Hopefully, to some extent, the anxiety can be relieved of a large crowd.
All in all, enrolling athletic students by lowering academic standards has brought moreadvantages to our society. As proved in ancient wisdom, every road leads to Rome. Academicscores are not the only way to higher education. Universities should provide an equal chance andtake in sports talents.
