171. I know how it works 我知道規(guī)矩
這里的work不是指“工作”，而是指“事物運(yùn)作的道理與規(guī)范”，類(lèi)似于行規(guī)的概念：
A：I am afraid we are going to have to fire you. 我恐怕我們得開(kāi)除你。
B：It’s OK. I know how it works. You just don’t like me.
沒(méi)關(guān)系，我知道行規(guī)。你就是看不慣我。
Work 也有“運(yùn)作”的意思：
A：Can you work a couple of basketball tickets for us?
你能幫我們弄幾張籃球票來(lái)嗎?
B：I’ll see what I can do. 我來(lái)想想辦法。
172. Give away. 送掉
Give away這個(gè)短語(yǔ)看起來(lái)很簡(jiǎn)單，不過(guò)它有很多常用的意思，對(duì)話中所用的give away是指“贈(zèng)送”：
A：Why did you give your bicycle away? 你為什么把你的自行車(chē)送掉了?
B：It’s too old. I want to get a new one anyway. 它太舊了。反正我要換新的。
Give away 也可以指“泄露(秘密)”：
A：I’m not talking to you about movies anymore. You always give away the endings!
我再也不跟你聊電影了。你每次都把結(jié)局透漏出來(lái)。
B：I’m sorry. I can’t stop myself. 很抱歉，我就是忍不住。
Give away這個(gè)短語(yǔ)，也常用在婚禮之時(shí)，就是當(dāng)父親牽著女兒的手，領(lǐng)著她出門(mén)的時(shí)候：
A：I love it when the father gives the bride away.
我最?lèi)?ài)看當(dāng)父親領(lǐng)著新娘出門(mén)的那一刻。
B：Not me. The part of the wedding always makes me cry.
我可不?；槎Y的那一幕總會(huì)讓我哭。
173. Mean business 玩真的
Mean business 是表示“當(dāng)真、玩真的”，沒(méi)有兒戲的成份在內(nèi)，一心一意地去達(dá)成某件事，未必和“生意”business有關(guān)：
A：I still can’t believe Mary got into college. 我還是不敢相信瑪莉考上大學(xué)了。
B：Well, she meant business this time. 恩，她這次是玩真的。
Mean business 也可以表示為了某種目的而來(lái)：
A：Why are the police outside? 警察怎么會(huì)在這里?
B：They mean business. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have come here.
他們來(lái)辦事。要不然他們不會(huì)來(lái)的。
