前兩期談bat，我再想到batten這個字。Batten的字源跟蝙蝠或者球棒都沒有關(guān)系，而是指木工所用的小木條，用作修補破舊的地板家具等。
常用的短語to batten down the hatch，原為航海術(shù)語。Hatch是儲物柜的門，風(fēng)雨來臨前，要好好加固這些柜門，一般做法是利用木條把門緊緊釘好，或者在門上蓋上帆布，四邊用木條釘緊，這個程序就叫to batten down the hatch。
引伸到其他情況，遇見麻煩時，先做一些準(zhǔn)備工作，就是to batten down the hatch。譬如：日本爆發(fā)核輻射危機，香港旅游業(yè)大受打擊，只好咬緊牙關(guān)，捱過難關(guān)。
The nuclear crisis in Japan means that fewer and fewer tourists will go there. Hong Kong's tourism industry has to batten down the hatch until the hard times are over.
