    at the World Media Summit in Beijing
    Good Morning. Mr President, Ladies and Gentlemen.
    I'd like to thank the Xinhua News Agency for inviting me here.
    It is truly an honour to address this distinguished audience in such a magnificent venue and to be able to experience the renowned warmth and generosity of the Chinese people, here in its capital city.
    I'm the Director of Global News at the BBC - that's the umbrella which holds together all the BBC's international news services - our English language services like the BBC World News television channel TV; BBC.Com/news; and, of course, BBC World Service - now a multimedia broadcast organisation which broadcasts in 32 languages, including English and Chinese.
    I lead services that currently achieve weekly multimedia audiences of 238 million across the globe.
    We are gathered here at the first-ever World Media Summit in Beijing.
    This is an unprecedented gathering of global media organizations, including wire services, newspapers and magazines, radio and television broadcasters and online media. We are all successful media organisations with vast experience of reaching massive numbers of readers, listeners and viewers.
    The challenges we face will be familiar to all of you:
    · Seismic shifts on global media
    · The internet making everything global
    · Fierce competition from media outlets that wouldn't have registered a few years ago
    · New technologies creating rapid changes in audience expectations - not least to contribute and take part and to consume when and how they choose
    But, on the plus side, in an ever more interconnected inter-dependent world, globalisation makes international media more relevant than ever.
    我們面臨的挑戰(zhàn)諸位也都熟悉,包括:全球媒體的巨大變化;互聯(lián)網(wǎng)把一切東西都變得全球化;來(lái)自一些幾年前可能還鮮為人知的媒體的激烈競(jìng)爭(zhēng);新技術(shù)使受眾的期望產(chǎn)生了迅速變化,受眾不僅主動(dòng)付出和參與其中,并按照自己選擇的時(shí)間和方式來(lái)使用媒體;但是,從積極的一面來(lái)說(shuō),在一個(gè)日益交融而彼此依賴的世界中,全球化使國(guó)際媒體比以往任何時(shí)候都(與受眾)密切相關(guān)了。
    This forum is an important opportunity to hear the experiences of some of the leading and most innovative players in the world as we start to map out that future.
    這次論壇是一個(gè)重要的機(jī)會(huì),讓我們?cè)陂_(kāi)始描繪未來(lái)圖景的時(shí)候,傾聽(tīng)世界上那些具有地位而且最富創(chuàng)意的媒體的經(jīng)驗(yàn)。
    The issues are big ones:
    · the challenges of integration in the multimedia age;
    · the new competition;
    · the impact of media on development;
    · the future of the newsroom and journalism
    · the impact of the convergence of technologies
    · the social responsibility of media
    · how we report an increasingly interconnected world
    我們要探討的議題都是重大的議題,包括:多媒體時(shí)代一體化帶來(lái)的挑戰(zhàn);新的競(jìng)爭(zhēng);媒體對(duì)發(fā)展的影響;編輯部和新聞報(bào)道的未來(lái)方向;技術(shù)整合產(chǎn)生的影響;媒體的社會(huì)責(zé)任;我們?nèi)绾螆?bào)道越來(lái)越緊密聯(lián)系的世界。
    It's important for all of us that we debate and discuss these big issues; and exchange views and perspectives so we learn from each other's experiences and help serve our audiences better in future. I would like to outline some of the thinking that's gone on in the BBC over the last few years in the face of rapidly changing audience demands; fierce competition and fast-emerging technologies. We do not have all the answers. But we have had to wrestle with the big challenges and have come to some ideas of where the answers lie.
    圍繞這些重大議題展開(kāi)討論和辯論,交流觀點(diǎn)和看法,學(xué)習(xí)彼此的經(jīng)驗(yàn),以便在未來(lái)更好地服務(wù)于受眾,這對(duì)于我們大家來(lái)說(shuō)都很重要。我想借此機(jī)會(huì)概括介紹一下近幾年來(lái)BBC在面對(duì)迅速變化的受眾需求、激烈的競(jìng)爭(zhēng)和新興技術(shù)時(shí),總結(jié)出的某些思路。我們并不是對(duì)所有問(wèn)題都有了答案。但我們必須應(yīng)對(duì)這些巨大的挑戰(zhàn),而且我們對(duì)在哪里可以找到答案也已有了一些想
