Ladies and gentlemen and media colleagues.
Allow me to introduce myself. I am Satoshi Ishikawa, president of Kyodo News from Japan. First of all, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Xinhua News Agency and the authorities concerned for taking the initiative to host this epoch-making conference and for their careful preparations. It is an honor for Kyodo News, and for me personally, to be given this opportunity to address media colleagues from around the world at this historic summit. This is a truly important conference, and it is my sincere hope that it will be a success.
I think that the main theme of this conference is the potential for cooperation and competition between new and old media in the era of globalization. As you well know, globalization and progress in information and communications technologies have put traditional paper-based media on the defensive, while permitting Internet search businesses to prosper and enabling handheld and mobile terminals such as smart phones, based on cutting-edge technologies, to dominate the media market. The global economic downturn, said to be the worst in a century, seems to have dealt a harder blow to the business of old, traditional media.
In this new era, the media's role and responsibility are becoming more important. As highly advanced information and communications technologies develop, exchanges and competition between news media are expanding, and services for end-consumers of news are diversifying in accordance with their preferences.
We believe the media have a social responsibility to promote world peace by sharing news and information about everyday events and by furthering mutual understanding in a way that goes beyond the limits of countries and regions.
For all of us, I believe, it is a great honor to be present at this World Media Summit. If we can deepen exchanges between our organizations and promote mutual understanding, then I think this will lead to great results.
Kyodo News was founded in November 1945. It is an independent, not-for-profit news agency headquartered in Tokyo. It is a cooperative formed by 56 newspaper and public broadcasting companies. The combined circulation of its member newspapers tops 25 million copies. Kyodo News provides news stories not only to member newspapers but also to more than 10 daily newspaper companies and over 100 private broadcasters. As one of Asia's leading international news agencies, we provide the latest news in English and Chinese and have over 300 overseas subscribers.
Costs for our news activities are covered mainly by contributions from the member companies as well as other subscription revenues. Kyodo News is financially independent of government as well as of any business corporation or organization. Kyodo News has more than 50 news-gathering bases in Japan and another 42 abroad. With a workforce of 1,700, including about 1,000 reporters and editors, Kyodo News conducts news activities 24 hours a day throughout the year.
The basic idea underpinning our newsgathering activities is to ''ensure the freedom and independence of journalism and counter the unjust exercise of power in order to support a peaceful and democratic society.'' I think the role of journalism in a democratic society is becoming more and more important as a result of the two-way communication made possible by the Internet. At Kyodo News we are continuing our efforts to strengthen newspapers' capability to report news in the Internet era through a dependable news-gathering operation that is able to respond to all changes in the media environment. We request that news sources make information available, we respect the rights of copyright holders, and we aim for fair and impartial reporting.
