爸爸前年十月七日跟你談過(guò)的橡樹(shù)（buckeye），你還記得嗎？
去年一月十二日跟你談過(guò)的小松鼠和nut，你還記得嗎？
有一種跟橡樹(shù)很像的樹(shù)，叫栗樹(shù)，叫chestnut，結(jié)出來(lái)的就是栗子，也叫chestnut。chest是箱子，nut是核中果子，你在臺(tái)北市可以買(mǎi)到糖炒栗子，就可以吃到箱子里的果子，很好吃。
栗樹(shù)是很好看的樹(shù)（a handsome tree），木頭可以做成木板和造紙。生命力很強(qiáng)，很死了還會(huì)長(zhǎng)一陣子，這叫做“雖死猶生”。
一個(gè)故事說(shuō)猴子（monkey）要吃火里面的栗子，可是自己伯燙，就騙貓去代它拿，貓伸手去拿（就是貓腳爪cat's paw），結(jié)果給燙了，于是出來(lái)一句英文成語(yǔ)，叫：
火中取栗Pull chestnuts from fire．或To pull out the chestnuts with the cat's paw.因?yàn)樨埍缓镒永昧?，做了傻瓜、做了瘟生、做了傀儡，所以：To make a cat's-paw of a person 就是利用某人的意思。cat's-paw or cats-paw——a person used by another to do something unpleasant or dangerous.
另有一種跟栗樹(shù)一類(lèi)的樹(shù)，結(jié)出來(lái)的栗子大，以前用來(lái)喂馬（horse），所以叫horse-chestnut，中文叫做七葉樹(shù)（葉子有七片）。horse-chestnut, 1.a large shade tree having spreading branches, large leaves, clusters of showy, white flowers, and glossy, brown nuts resembling chestnuts. 2.the nut. 3.any tree or shrub of the same family as the horse chestnut. horse-chestnut這個(gè)字若反過(guò)來(lái)，成為chestnut horse，就變成栗色馬。
林肯跟道格拉斯（Stephen A. Douglas）辯論的時(shí)候（一八五八年競(jìng)選參議員the U. S. ——Senate），林肯挖苦Douglas胡說(shuō)八通，說(shuō)他A man can prove a horse-chestnut to be a chestnut horse.（一個(gè)想把七葉樹(shù)證明是栗色馬的人）。
