At a Crossing
張禹
While I was spending my summer holidays in Shanghai, I had my leg cut by a knife. Several days later, I found the wound festering①, and went to see a doctor (surgeon)。 He operated on it and told me not to walk around for at least three days.
But it was impossible for me not to go out, for I had to go to work. The next day I walked from house to house, from street to street, delivering newspapers and letters. In the evening when the day's work was almost over, I felt very tired, and the wound was giving me a greater pain than in the morning. Then I realized that to earn money was not an easy thing.
I had to walk home, for I didn't have enough money for the bus fare. It was late and there were very few people in the streets. When I got to a crossing, I saw no car coming in my direction, so I started limping② across the street without looking at the traffic lights. Suddenly a bus was coming towards me at a middle speed. I had no choice but to stand still in the middle of the street, thinking that the driver was sure to shout at me angrily. To my great surprise, the driver, a woman, stopped the bus a few meters away from me and smiled at me. This meant that she would let me go first, I tried to walk as fast as I could. When I reached the other side of the street safely, I turned back to have a look at the kind driver. I didn't know how to express my feelings. The only thing I could do was to smile at her to show my thanks. When the bus went away, there were tears in my eyes.
I will never forget that day, that crossing and that woman driver.
