2006年12月真題(新題型)
    The National Endowment for the Arts recently released
    the results of its “Reading at Risk” survey, which described
    the movement of the American public away from books and
    literature and toward television and electronic media.
    According to the survey, “reading is on the decline on every ___1___
    region, within every ethnic group, and at every educational level.”
    The day the NEA report released, the U.S. House, in a tie ___2___
    Vote, upheld the government’s right to obtain bookstore and
    library records under a provision of the USA Patriot Act. The
    House proposal would have barred the federal government
    from demand library records, reading lists, book customer ___3___
    lists and other material in terrorism and intelligence investigations.
    These two events are completely unrelated to, yet they ___4___
    echo each other in the message they send about the place of
    books and reading in American culture. At the heart
    of the NEA survey is the belief in our democratic ___5___
    System depends on leaders who can think critically, analyze
    texts and writing clearly. All of these are skills promoted by ___6___
    reading and discussing books and literature. At the same time,
    through a provision of the Patriot Act, the leaders of our
    country are unconsciously sending the message that reading
    may be connected to desirable activities that might ___7___
    undermine our system of government rather than helping
    democracy flourish.
    Our culture’s decline in reading begin well before the___8___
    existence of the Patriot Act. During the 1980s’ culture wars,
    school systems across the country pulled some books from
    library shelves because its content was deemed by parents ___9___
    and teachers to be inappropriate. Now what started in schools
    across the country is playing itself out on a nation stage and ___10___
    is possibly having an impact on the reading habits of the
    American public.
    答案及解析:
    1. on -> in.
    本行中According to the survey在語義和結構上都沒有錯;on the decline為固定搭配,意為“呈下降趨勢”,符合文意,也正確;故將錯誤鎖定為介詞on。on意為“在…之上”,而此處表示“在任何地區(qū)/區(qū)域”,故將on改為in(在;在…之內(nèi))。
    2. report后加was.
    分析句子結構,the U.S.House(美國眾議院)為句子主句,upheld(支持,贊成)為謂語,The day the NEA report released是一個時間狀語從句,此處關系代詞when被省略;report應該是被發(fā)表的,所以應在report和released之間插入was,released對此也有很好的提示作用。注意此處應該使用系動詞的過去時態(tài)。in a tie vote為習慣用法,意為“以微弱優(yōu)勢勝出”。
    3. demand -> demanding。
    “bar...from doing sth.”為固定用法,意為“阻止/禁止…做某事”。
    4. to -> /.
    “unrelated to”為固定搭配,意為“與…無關”,其后須接名詞;如果保留介詞to,根據(jù)語義此處需添加名詞性詞組each other,這與命題規(guī)律不符,故將to去掉。unrelated意為“無關的,不相關的”。
    5. in -> that.
    分析句子結構,本句為介詞短語提前引起的倒裝句,句子的謂語is被提到主語the belief之前。本句中同時出現(xiàn)兩個動詞,系動詞is在主句中作謂語,因此depends應該是從句中的謂語。本句中,our democratic system depends on leaders...clearly是the belief的同位語從句;同位語從句中,先行詞為物時,一般由關系代詞that來引導,且that不能省略,故將in改為that。belief in為習慣用法,意為“相信…,對…有信心”,但介詞in不能引導從句。
    6. writing -> wrtie.
    writing與think和analyze是由and連接的三個并列的動詞,且三個動詞都位于情態(tài)動詞can之后,應使用動詞原形,故將writing改為write。
    7. desirable -> undesirable.
    be connected to為固定用法,意為“與…有關”,其后一般接名詞。此處的定語從句that might undermine our system of government rather than helping democracy flourish修飾名詞activities,根據(jù)從句中的undermine(損壞,破壞)及rather than helping(而不是幫助)可知,這些活動(activities)應該是消極的,desirable(可取的,有利的)與語義不符,故將desirable改為undesirable。
    8. begin -> began.
    “decline in”為習慣用法,意為“在某方面有所下降”;well可以表示程度,意為“相當?shù)?;充分的”,well before表示“早在…之前就已經(jīng)”。before表示動作已經(jīng)發(fā)生,因此本句中的動詞應使用過去時態(tài),故將begin改為began。
    9. its -> their.
    because在本句中引導原因狀語從句,從句中的主語content(內(nèi)容)為不可數(shù)名詞,且本句描述的是過去發(fā)生的事,故從句中的was為單復數(shù)形式和時態(tài)都正確。此處的its對應的是主句中的some books,二者在語意上矛盾,故將its改為their 。
    10 nation -> national.
    本句的主語為由what引導的從句,故謂語為is,主謂一致正確。play out為固定搭配,意為“發(fā)出;展示”;此處表示“在全國范圍這個舞臺上展示”,nation意為“國家,民族”,強調(diào)國家主權和民族特征,常含政治意味;national意為“的;全國范圍內(nèi)的”,表示一種更高級別或更大的范圍,故將nation改為national。
