A commercial bank (CB) is an organization established to: accept deposits from individuals and businesses; originate credit by providing loans and offering other financial services essential to the running of a customer's financial or business affairs, including fund transfers, check cashing, safe deposit boxes, etc. In China CBs operate under the supervision of the People's Bank of China and business operations must follow the Commercial Banking Law of China. Although CBs do not issue currency, they manage it. Examples of large CBs in China are: Bank of China, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, China Construction Bank. These 4 banks differ from most foreign CBs, because they are state-owned. However, because these banks are now responsible for their own profitability and compliance with the banking regulations, they are in a practical sense like regular CBs.
