Caitlin and her father, the zoologist Mr Edwards, went in a boat or walked along the shore to study sea lions every day. The Near Islands, in Alaska, was where they lived. They came to the Near Islands to study sea lions and their habitat. Caitlin and her father lived in a wooden house overlooking a small cove. They took notes and pictures of the sea lions.
One morning, Caitlin was playing with Sammy, a young sea lion. Sammy had a white and gray face and was the smallest of the group. That was how Caitlin told him from the other sea lions. Suddenly, Sammy yelped and cried. "There must be a storm coming,"thought Caitlin. Sammy only acted like that when a storm was on its way. That night there was strong winds. The wind whistled through the air, and the waves were high. Sammy was right —there was a storm coming!
Mr Edwards put on a warm fire. Caitlin was extremely worried about how the sea lions were going to keep warm. Her father explained that they had thick fur to stay warm. He also said they would snuggle up in their cave. Caitlin remembered that the cave was the length of a football field.
Off the coast, there was an oil field. An oil tanker filled with oil was heading out to sea. The oil tanker was out at sea when the captain heard about the storm, but he couldn’t turn back because it would be too windy and risky to do so. In the storm, the boat hit some rocks and all the oil spilled out. The oil was heading toward the sea lions. Mr Edwards heard about it on the radio and told Caitlin. Caitlin was very worried.
Maybe the sea lions could swim away from the oil; they could swim 17 miles per hour! Mr Edwards and Caitlin called all over town for help. Finally, an organization sent some helicopters. They blocked off the oil and it didn’t hit the sea lions after all. Caitlin and her father were very excited.
