The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Health has released a blood bank telephone number to encourage people to donate blood. The move is aimed at storing enough RH blood for 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
In 2008, about 5 million foreigners will come to Beijing. Many will have the RH blood type--which is rare in Asia. If injuries happen and a blood transfusion is necessary, only about 3 or 4 percent of Asians have the RH type blood. That compares to about 15 percent of people in the west.
The "Home of rare blood types," established in 2001, is keeping in touch with four hundred citizens with RH blood. Previously, the storage of RH blood was 1000 bags per year. This blood type is collected and stored at low temperature where it can be kept for about ten years.
