SECTION B SKIMMING AND SCANNING (開始SECTION B SKIMMING AND SCANNING計時)
Direction: In this section there are seven passages followed by ten questions or unfinished statements. Skim or scan the passages as required and then mark your answers on your answer sheet.
TEXT E First read the following questions. 81. Whats the main idea of this passage? A. To describe the officials in former Federal Republic of Germany. B. To let readers know why amphibians cross the road. C. To show the animal-protecting moves in F. R. G. D. To arouse peoples care for animals such as frogs. 82. Why do amphibians cross the road? A. They dont want to lay their eggs where they live at other times. B. They want to find a good place where their young can live in water. C . They want to move for a change. D. They want to live without the danger of the shortage of oxygen. Now skim the passage below and answer the question In one country, at least, some frogs dont have to cross the road to get to the other side. They travel through tunnels built just for them. It all started when a college student in former Federal Republic of Germany discovered that thousands of amphibians -- mainly frogs, newts, and toads -- were being run over on the countrys highways. At breeding time, large numbers of the animals crossed the highways at certain spots. They had to reach ponds and streams to lay their eggs (Adult amphibians breathe air; the young, born with gills, can breathe only in water). Many never made it. The student told German officials about the problem, and the officials came up with a solution, amphibian underpasses. Today, more than 50 tunnels give amphibians a safe way to get to the other side of the road.
    81. What's the main idea of this passage?
    A) To describe the officials in former Federal Republic of Germany.
    B) To let readers know why amphibians cross the road.
    C) To show the animal-protecting moves in F. R. G.
    D) To arouse people's care for animals such as frogs.
    82. Why do amphibians cross the road?
    A) They don't want to lay their eggs where they live at other times.
    B) They want to find a good place where their young can live in water.
    C) They want to move for a change.
    D) They want to live without the danger of the shortage of oxygen.
TEXT F First read the following question. 83. Which one cannot be inferred from the passage? A. Before World War H , Japan had got more powerful carrier fleet than Britain. B. The attack on Pearl Harbor was the fuse of the Pacific War. C. At least, one carrier of the U.S. joined in the battle of Midway. D. After June, 1942, there were only two carriers left in Japan Navy. Now skim the passage and answer the question. After World War I major carrier fleets were built by the United States, Japan and Britain; in the 1930s tactical exercises were held by the U.S. Navy to study and improve efficiency of its carrier operations. By World War II, however, Japans carrier fleet was numerically and qualitatively superior to the American and British fleets in the Pacific. The use of six aircraft carriers by Japan to attack Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, opened the war in the Pacific. No American carrier were present during, the attack/ The major carrier battle of Midway of June 3~6, 1949, cost the Japanese four earners; American lost one, the Yorktown .
    83. Which one cannot be inferred from the passage?
    A) Before World War H , Japan had got more powerful carrier fleet than Britain.
    B) The attack on Pearl Harbor was the fuse of the Pacific War.
    C) At least, one carrier of the U.S. joined in the battle of Midway.
    D) After June, 1942, there were only two carriers left in Japan Navy.
TEXT G First read the following questions. 84. A ships captain calculated his vessels longitude in old days because he wanted to ______ A. have a science research with the longitude. B. know where he was and where he would go. C. check the theory of longitude. D. kill the time with it while there used to be nothing interesting for him at sea. 85. Which is the right statement? A. People used to use stars for calculation. B. The star catalogue complied by John Flamsteed is the most accurate in the world. C. The timepiece made by John Harrison could directly give right locations. D. Today, the observatory cant tell the accurate longitude any more. Now skim the passage and answer the question. The original reason for the R. G. Os (Royal Greenwich Observatory) creation was to try to solve the "longitude problem" -- in other words to work out a method by which a ships captain could calculate his vessels longitude at sea. The first Astronomer Royal. John Flamsteed, complied the most accurate star catalogue of his day as part of this attempt (though the solution was eventually provided by John Harrison, a clock maker who designed a timepiece that was robust enough to withstand the rigors of sea travel, and was thus able to substitute for the stars in the relevant calculations.) Today, the observatory is more concerned with issues like star formation and the origins of quasars -- but it still does world-respected science.

    C) check the theory of longitude.
    D) kill the time with it while there used to be nothing interesting for him at sea.
    85. Which is the right statement?
    A) People used to use stars for calculation.
    B) The star catalogue complied by John Flamsteed is the most accurate in the world.
    C) The timepiece made by John Harrison could directly give right locations.
    D) Today, the observatory can't tell the accurate longitude any more.
