Danny: What's the matter this time?
Fred: Don't look at me like that. My mouse has stopped working, so I can't use my computer. And I've got a lot of work to do.
Danny: Have you checked that it's plugged in properly at the back of the computer?
Fred: Yes I have.
Danny: Well in that case, let me remove the ball and have a look inside.
Fred: OK, here you are, but please handle it with care.
Danny: Just as I thought, it's full of fluff and dirt. I'll clean that out, put it back together again and it'll work as good as new.

首先請注意The mouse will work as good as new這一句。As good as是成語，意思是‘和……一樣’，切勿望文生義，解作‘和……一樣好’，例如：(1) Mary's husband left her more than twenty years ago. They are as good as divorced（瑪麗的丈夫二十多年前棄她而去，兩人幾乎等同離婚了）。(2) When he was rushed to hospital, he was as good as dead（他被火速送到醫(yī)院時，已和死人無異）。當然，as good as new由于是說‘和新的一樣’，一般都有‘狀況很好’的意思。
Let me remove the ball那一句的ball，則是指鼠標底部的圓球，即rolling ball（滾動圓球）。The ball rolls as the mouse moves on the mouse pad, and the pointer/arrow moves correspondingly on the computer screen即‘鼠標在鼠標墊上移動，圓球就同時滾動，計算機屏幕上的指針也會跟著走’。
