Iraqi Government to Probe Saddam Execution Video
A top aide to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says the government has launched an inquiry into how the execution of former dictator Saddam Hussein was secretly filmed and distributed. A video showing Saddam being taunted on the gallows has spread on the Internet and by mobile telephone since Saturday's execution. In the footage, one of those present at the execution can be heard shouting "Moqtada," the name of a radical Shi'ite cleric and opponent of Saddam.
The film led some critics to describe the execution as a sectarian act against the deposed Sunni Arab leader. Many Sunni Arabs are angry because of the execution timing, on the first day of a major Muslim holiday. Sunni clerics in Iraq also criticized the execution, saying it was ordered by what it called occupiers.
Reports from Jordan Monday say Saddam Hussein's eldest daughter joined hundreds of people in Amman protesting his execution.
