WHO Official: Containment Crucial in Bird Flu Prevention
The World Health Organization says rapid intervention at the earliest signs of a bird flu outbreak in humans could prevent or delay a pandemic of the disease.
The agency's director for the Western Pacifici says once there are signs the H5N1 virus is spreading among people, there will be only two or three weeks in which to act.
He says quickly using anti-viral drugs, travel restrictions and quarantines could be effective in preventing an epidemic. He says all nations need to be accountable for such measures.
Since 2003, bird flu has infected more than 200 people, most of them in Asia, and more than 100 have died.
