Schools should teach children some academic subjects which will be beneficial to their future careers. Therefore, other subjects such as music and sports are not important. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Schools are responsible primarily for teaching students academic abilities which they will use in their future careers and therefore some feel that extracurricular activities such as music and sports are extraneous and should not be included in their curricula. The inclusion of such activities however is vital to the complete development of a young mind and cannot be absent from the scholastic experience.(63 words)
Extracurricular activities provided by schools can easily be seen as superfluous by those not involved in the school system, especially those who ultimately pay for those activities through taxation. These people view the function of compulsory education as being charged solely with preparing students for the working world and professional success. In these areas, skills such as tossing a ball or playing a flute are inapplicable and therefore, in the minds of opponents to these activities, an unnecessary financial strain on an already under-funded educational system. Proponents of extracurricular activities, however, contend that there is more to the issue.(99 words)
The benefits of extracurricular activities do not rest in the skills that they directly impart to students; throwing a ball with great accuracy, though impressive to most, is not in fact a vital skill around the office. Instead, the invaluable cooperative communication, and leadership skills that students acquire from participating in extracurricular activities imbue them with a multifacetedcharacter full of self-confidence as well as rounded and whole. Not to mention, no matter how successful, a well trained worker cannot relax by tallying figures, and cannot invite friends out for a friendly game of ‘fill out the remittance report’.(99 words)
Extracurricular activities allow schools to provide a milieu in which students can challenge themselves and create priceless memories, instead of churning out legions of soulless automatons. Rather than simply being trained to work, students should be taught to live.(39 words)
