    Tom:Are you saying we don’t have time to watch our favorite show tonight? Jane, you know I really don’t like our teacher all that much. He gives far too much homework. He criticizes me in front of everyone all the time.
    Jane:To tell the truth, I don’t really like him either. He’s kind of boring and not very active. He always looks unhappy too.
    Tom:Yes, and he also…
    Jane:Do you think we should be talking about him like this behind his back?
    Tom:Probably not. After all he is our teacher. We should try to find something nice to say. If you can’t say something nice you shouldn’t say anything at all.
    Jane:I absolutely agree. It’s getting dark. We should finish our homework now.
    Tom: All right. I want to take a shower first, I’m exhausted.
    回家后
    簡:終于到家了。不過今晚我們有一大堆作業(yè)要做。
    湯姆:你是說我們沒時(shí)間看喜歡的電視節(jié)目了嗎?簡,你知道我真的不那么喜歡我們老師。他布置的作業(yè)太多了。而且總是在大家面前批評我。
    簡:說實(shí)話,我也不是很喜歡他。他有點(diǎn)兒乏味而且一點(diǎn)兒也不活躍,看起來總是一副不開心的樣子。
    湯姆:對啊,而且他還…
    簡:你覺得我們應(yīng)該在背后這樣說他嗎?
    湯姆:不應(yīng)該,畢竟他是我們的老師。我們應(yīng)該找點(diǎn)好的說。如果你不能說點(diǎn)好的,那就別說了。
    簡:我完全贊成。天要黑了,我們還是先把功課做完吧。
    湯姆:好吧。我想先沖個(gè)澡。累死了
    起居室(drawing room)一詞的來源
     通常,我們回家后,就會毫無顧忌地在起居室(drawing room)的沙發(fā)上躺下來,因?yàn)樵谕饷鎰诶哿艘惶?,回到家里終于可以放松放松(relax)了。
     看到這里,大家不禁要問,“起居室”不是寫成“l(fā)iving room”或“sitting room”嗎?為什么還能寫成“drawing room”呢?
     我們知道draw有“繪畫”的意思,但是“drawing room”(起居室)卻與藝術(shù)一點(diǎn)也不相干?!癲rawing room”是指“接待客人的房間”,也就是“客廳”或“起居室”,其英文解釋是“a room, especially a large room in a large house, where people sit and relax, or entertain guests”,它是一種比較正式的說法。
     關(guān)于“drawing room”的來源,其背后有個(gè)小故事。“drawing room”這個(gè)詞源自于“withdrawing room”。在英國過去有個(gè)習(xí)慣,為了讓女士們不受男士“吞云吐霧”的吸煙之害,就要求她們在用餐后待在飯廳旁的另一個(gè)房間。也就是要求女士們從飯廳中“退出來”(withdraw),然后男士們就可以盡情地抽煙喝酒、高談闊論,而不受干擾了。
     至于女士們所停留的那個(gè)房間,本來叫做“withdrawing room”,后來就約定俗成地寫成“drawing room”了。
