Generation gap refers to the distance and contradiction between the old and the young because of lack mutual understanding. It is a common issue around the world, and if not properly settled, it will lead to serious social problems.
Most sociologists believe that generation gap, in fact, reflects the different value sysytems supported by the old and the young. Generation gap may result from different attitude toward the constant changes of the world. Generally speaking, the old people tend to stick to traditional principles and beliefs and thus they are reluctant to embrace new ideas and new things; while the young generation is always keeping pace with fashion and changes of the world and views the old generation as outdated, stubborn and odd. And under most circumstances, there lacks a mutual respect and communication between the two generations, which will result in difference, disagreement, confrontation and even hostility within families.
Geneartion gap is natural, but should be paid considerable attention to. If we are unable to deal with it smartly, it will only deepen the misunderstanding between the young and the old, and consequently it will devastate the social and domestic relations and disturb the social orders
