When I was four, I had the most vivid and thrilling dream I had experienced to date. It is the first time I remember dreaming in pictures with a strong linear narrative. I was alone in the dream, on the beach at night. The stars were out and the moon hung full in the dark, clear sky. I dreamt that I was being chased along the shore and up along the jutting cliffs, by a pack of huge, snarling, growling wolves. I ran as fast as my short legs could carry me, scared out of my wits by these threatening beasts. I charged up the steep hillside until I reached the cliff edge, where I had either to stop or to fall to my death on the jagged rocks below. So I turned around to face my pursuers, and found that in this process I had become their human queen. They stopped growling, stopped attacking, and came over to rub their fur against me and lick my face. For several years after I had this dream, haunting howls would permeate my dreams. Every time I went to the beach with my family, I would look out for the footprints that those wolves left behind them in the sand.
