上期大家對“增加了……倍”的譯法進行了討論。
先做道例題：與去年同期相比，今年的出口總量增長了兩倍。（就是增長到三倍）
正確譯文:The total amount of the export has increased by three times, compared to the same time last year.（使用by）
或：The total amount of the export has increased three times, compared to the same time last year.（什么都不用）
或：The total amount of the export has increased threefold, compared to the same time last year.（使用ad. threefold）
或：The total amount of the export has increased to three times, compared to the same time last year.（使用to）
分析：今年出口總量增加了兩倍，是說在去年的基礎(chǔ)上再增加了兩倍。那么，也就是說今年的產(chǎn)量應該已經(jīng)增長到去年同期的三倍。所以，翻譯成by twice是誤譯。正確答案是by three times和上述其余形式。還是比較疑惑的同學可以參考 這里?；蛘逷M我。
總結(jié)一下increase 3 times，increase to 3 times和increase by 3 times三者同義，即意思都是“增加到三倍”，（增加了兩倍），即“乘三”。今后的節(jié)目也會有數(shù)字表達的專題。
可見，對數(shù)字的翻譯并不是想象中那么簡單，很有必要搞清楚關(guān)于數(shù)字的各種句型以及它們的確切表達方式和翻譯方法。只有熟練掌握各種表達的差異，才能避免在翻譯中出現(xiàn)這類錯誤。Exercise Four

1. Among various kinds of sports
解析：全句意為：在各種運動中，我尤其喜歡慢跑。說“在……中”我們通常用介詞in。但這里“在所有運動中”，實際上是給出了所有運動項目的范圍，“我”在眾多項目中作出一個選擇，并不是指位置上的“在……里面”?？蛇x用among…，或of all the…來表達。
2. is attached to that famous university
解析：belong to雖然有“屬于”的含義。但它是不及物動詞，不可用于被動語態(tài)。有考生可能會譯成this hospital belonged to that famous university，這樣語法上雖然成立，但不符合詞語內(nèi)涵。中文“附屬”不完全等于belong，belong to 體現(xiàn)不出“附著”的概念。因此，我們可用attach來代替belong to。Be attached to是指附在……上的，隸屬于……。所以正解為is attached to that famous university。但這種用法要和attach…to… 區(qū)分開來，如：attach importance to…（認為有重要性）；attach himself to me（他老粘著我）。
3. a quick mind
解析： rapid雖表示快，但它通常是指跑步，說話等速度快。此題是說他腦子反應很快。應該選擇quick一詞。Quick形容人時，可以表示聰明，領(lǐng)悟能力強。其他說法還有：quick-minded（腦子敏捷的）；quick-tempered（性情急躁的）；quick-witted（有機智的）；quick-eared（耳尖尖的）?？忌欢ㄒ⒁饨x詞詞義和詞域的辨別。
4. a lot of social problems have arisen
解析：本句意為：隨著臺灣經(jīng)濟的快速發(fā)展，許多社會問題也隨之產(chǎn)生。問題的產(chǎn)生可以用arise，但arise是不及物動詞，不能用作被動語態(tài)。arise 常和from連用，如：Accidents arise from carelessness.（疏忽大意往往會引起事故的發(fā)生）。句子需填入部分還可以譯成：a lot of social problems have been caused. 除此之外，“產(chǎn)生”的英語表達有：come into being，give birth to, take place, bring about等。考生一定要分清它們各自的使用規(guī)則。另一組需要大家比較的詞匯是：arise,rise,raise,arouse.
5. Whenever I thought of the polluted brook near my home
解析：“每當……的時候，就……”可譯成：Whenever…/ Every time when…。下面這些表達也是常用句型。
每當我聽到……？我就忍不住感到興奮。

每當我做…，我就忍不住感到悲傷。
Whenever I do…，I cannot but feel sad.
