It was a bitter cold evening in northern Virginia manyyears ago. The old man’s beard was glazed bywinter’s frost while he waited for a ride across theriver. The wait seemed endless. His body becamenumb and stiff from the frigid north wind.
He heard the faint, steady rhythm of approachinghooves galloping along the frozen path. Anxiously,he watched as several horsemen rounded the bend. He let the first one passed by without anyeffort to get his attention, then another passed by, and another. Finally, the last rider nearedthe spot where the old man sat like a snow statue. As this one draw near, the old man caughtthe rider’s eye and said, “sir, would you mind giving an old man a ride to the other side? Theredoesn’t appear to be a passage way by foot.”
這里沒有可以步行的路了?!?BR> Reining his horse, the rider replied, “sure thing. Hop aboard.” Seeing the old man was unable tolift his half-frozen body from the ground, the horseman dismounted and helped the old manonto the horse. The horseman took the old man not just across the river, but to hisdestination, which was just a few miles away.
As they neared the tiny but cozy cottage, the horseman’s curiosity caused him to inquire, “sir, I notice you let several other riders pass by without making an effort to secure a ride. Then I came up and you immediately asked me for a ride. I am curious why, on such a bitternight, you would wait and ask the last rider. What if I had refused and left you here?”
The old man lowered himself slowly down from the horse, looked the rider straight in the eyes, and replied, “I have been around these here parts for some time. I reckon I know people prettygood.” The old-timer continued, “I looked into the eyes of the other riders and immediately sawthere was no concern for my situation. It would have been useless even to ask them for a ride. But when I looked into your eyes, that your gentle spirit would welcome the opportunity togive me assistance in my time of need.”
“I’m so grateful for what youhave said, ” he told the old man. “May I never get too busy in my own affairs that I fail torespond to the needs of others with kindness and compassion.”
彼嬖V老人,“我絕不會(huì)再因?yàn)槭聞?wù)繁忙而放棄給別人提供善良和憐憫的幫助?!?BR> With that, Thomas Jefferson turned his horse around and made his way back to the WhiteHouse.

“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” — Dalai Lama
“幸福并非那種已經(jīng)擁有的東西,她源自于你自己的行動(dòng)?!?----達(dá)賴?yán)?BR> Having a happier life is something we all always strive for, and being happy encompasses so many aspects—mental, physical and spiritual—of our lives.
What I’ve learned from being happy is that no matter how bad our days get, happiness can be found, especially when we consistently try to consciously be happy.
1.Learn how to relax when setbacks arise.
We do not live in a perfect world. Some days are great; some days are not. Some days, the buses run extremely late, and you swear you’ll never take the public transport ever again. Accept the fact that that things may not go as planned. Instead of trying to change something you can’t, focus your energy on changing something that is within your control.
2.Laugh in the middle of a busy day.
It’s 3 PM on a Friday afternoon and you’re desperate to leave the office. On top of the work you have, you’re running close to a super important deadline. Instead of blaming everything not going your way, take a moment to laugh.
3.Do not compare yourself to others.
Measure your own successes based on your progress, and only yours. All of our lives are unique, and no one is better than any one else. Try not to think that you are better than anyone else as it promotes unhealthy superiority and can be detrimental to your happiness.
4.See that colleague in the beautiful new dress? Compliment her.
Everyone loves compliments, including that colleague who just walked in on a Monday morning in a beautiful dress. Being kind to others, like passing random compliments, it makes people happy, boosting self-esteem and confidence. Don’t be afraid to tell people how great they look, or how awesome their smile is. It’ll do good for them, and you!
5.Stop trying to please others.
It’s tiring and you will soon run out of time to please yourself, period.
6.Focus on the present moment.
Take some time every day to focus on the present moment; it is the only certain time we have in our life. Try not to think about the negative past experiences and embrace the time you have now. You’ll soon find that even the slightest thing that you do at this moment can bring about happiness for many hours and days to come.
