本句的主干是I would have assumed。倒裝結(jié)構(gòu)Had I not attended this workshop為條件狀語從句;the man was the best candidate為assumed的賓語從句，省略了引導(dǎo)詞that ; because引導(dǎo)的是原因狀語從句。
assume的意思是“設(shè)想，認(rèn)為”。如:
I cannot assume anything in this case.在這種情況下，我無法作任何猜測。
a bit of本義是“少量，一點(diǎn)點(diǎn)”，前面加了quite，則意為“大量的”。如:
The novel will take a bit of reading.這本小說不需要花很多時(shí)間來看。
英語四級(jí)考點(diǎn)歸納:
由if引導(dǎo)的條件狀語從句，有時(shí)可把if省略，將從句的系動(dòng)詞或助動(dòng)詞前置構(gòu)成倒裝，這種情況下句子一般采用的是虛擬語氣，表示一種假設(shè)的概念。如:
Were it not for his help, I would be in trouble.要不是他幫忙，我就陷入麻煩了。(系動(dòng)詞were前置)
Had we made adequate preparations, we might have succeeded.我們要是準(zhǔn)備充分的話或許就成功了。(助動(dòng)詞had前置)
