    塞翁失馬
    Near China's northern borders lived a man called Sai Weng. He raised a lot of horses.
    戰(zhàn)國(guó)時(shí)期,靠近北部邊城,住著一個(gè)姓塞老人, 他養(yǎng)了許多馬。
    One day, he lost one of his horses. Everyone commiserated with him.
    一天,他的一匹走失了,人們聽說這件事,跑來安慰他。
    "Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a blessing," said Sai Weng.
    塞翁說:“沒準(zhǔn)會(huì)帶來什么福氣呢?!?BR>    After a few months, his horse came back, leading a fine horse from the north.
    過了幾個(gè)月,丟失的馬不僅自己回了家,還帶回一匹匈奴的駿馬。
    Everyone congratulated him.
    所有人都來祝賀塞翁。
    "Perhaps this may turn out to be a cause of misfortune," said Sai Weng.
    塞翁反而說:“這或許會(huì)帶來不幸呢。”
    Since he was well-off and kept good horses, his son became fond of riding and eventually broke his leg for falling from a horse.
    因?yàn)槿毯芨挥?,并且養(yǎng)馬養(yǎng)得很好,所以他的兒子也十分喜愛騎馬。但沒想到有一次騎馬時(shí),他的兒子從馬上掉了下來,摔斷了腿。
    Everyone commiserated with him. "Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a blessing," said his father.
    人們于是又去安慰塞翁。但塞翁卻說:“也許這次又會(huì)帶來好運(yùn)呢?!?BR>    One year later, the northern tribes started a big invasion of the border regions.
    一年以后,匈奴入侵邊境。
    This man's son did not join in the fighting because he was crippled and so he survived.
    但是塞翁的兒子因?yàn)橥葦嗔吮銢]有被征入當(dāng)兵隊(duì)伍之中,而其他很多當(dāng)兵的青年都戰(zhàn)死在了沙場(chǎng),塞翁的兒子因此保住了性命。

    鶴立雞群
    Ji Shao, an aide to Emperor Jin Hui during the Jin Dynasty, was handsome and talented.
    晉朝時(shí),有一個(gè)人叫嵇紹,擔(dān)任晉惠帝的侍從官。他長(zhǎng)得儀表堂堂,而且才能出眾。
    Once, when his country was being invaded, he accompanied Emperor Jin Hui in defending the country, but, unfortunately, they lost the war. Most of the soldiers died or deserted, but Ji Shao stayed with the emperor to protect him.
    一次,有人侵犯京城。嵇紹跟隨惠帝前去,征討叛亂。不料打了敗仗,隨行的官員、將領(lǐng)以及侍衛(wèi)死傷無數(shù),還有很多人逃跑了,只有嵇紹保護(hù)著惠帝,始終不離左右。
    Upon seeing this, the people were moved and said:"Ji Shao stand out like a camel amongst a group of sheep, preeminent and superior."
    看到嵇紹奮勇殺敵的情景人們都很有感觸,說:“嵇紹就像一只鶴站立在雞群中一樣,儀表出眾,氣度不凡?!?BR>    This idiom is currently used to describe prominent people with good looks and impressive abilities among a crowd.

    If you wish good advice, consult an old man
    老馬識(shí)途
    In the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Huan of Qi led an army to attack a small state in the north.
    春秋時(shí)代,齊桓公出征攻打北方一個(gè)小國(guó)。
    They went in spring when green grass covered the ground.
    去的時(shí)候是春天,遍地綠草茵茵。
    But when they came back it was winter.Everywhere was white with snow and the wind was howling.The troops lost their way.
    回來的時(shí)候是冬天,白雪茫茫,狂風(fēng)怒吼,于是齊桓公的隊(duì)伍迷失了方向。
    While everybody was worrying, Guan Zhong, the duke's chief minister, suggested: 'An old horse may know the way.'
    找不到回去的路,大家都很著急。這時(shí),齊桓公的宰相管仲說:“可以利用老馬的經(jīng)驗(yàn)。”
    So the duke ordered several old horse to be selected to lead the army. Finally, they found the way back home.
    于是齊桓公派人挑選了幾匹老馬在前面引路,果然走出了迷谷,找到了回去的道路。
    This idiom refers to the value of experience.
    “老馬識(shí)途”這個(gè)成語(yǔ)用來比喻有經(jīng)驗(yàn)的人,熟悉情況,辦事效果好。
