原文：All teaching at Sussex is in the English language and you must therefore be sufficiently fluent in English to be able to benefit from your education. If your first language is not English, you are normally expected to have passed an appropriate test in English, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Pearson’s Test of English (Academic). If you do not have evidence of appropriate English language ability at the point when you apply, this will normally form part of the conditions of any offer.

For most courses, we require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each of the four components (Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing) or the Pearson’s Test of English (Academic) with 62 overall including at least 56 in all four skills. The exceptions to this are:
the BM BS in Medicine, requiring an IELTS score of 7.5 overall and not less than 7.0 in each section
the BA in Social Work, requiring an IELTS score of 7.0 overall with not less than 6.5 in each section (or the Pearson’s Test of English (Academic) with 67 overall including at least 62 in all four skills).
We would expect English language qualifications to have been achieved within the two years prior to starting.

原文：The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) may also be acceptable as evidence of English language ability but only if you do not require a visa to study in the UK. TOEFL is no longer a recognised Secure English Language Test with the UK Home Office and therefore cannot be used as evidence of English in a Tier 4 visa application. If you require a visa to study in the UK, you will need to have taken a different English language test (such are IELTS or Pearson’s) to support your application.
For those not requiring a visa, the standard TOEFL requirement (ie for all undergraduate degrees except Social Work and Medicine) is an overall score of 88, with at least 20 in Listening, 19 in Reading, 21 in Speaking and 23 in Writing. If you register for a TOEFL test, you will be able to arrange to have your results sent directly to Sussex. When you register, TOEFL will ask for the University’s designated institution (DI) code, which is 9166.
