Tsunami Warning Issued for Japan, Russia
Japan's meteorological agency and the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center have issued a tsunami warning for Japan and Russia's Pacific Coast after a powerful earthquake struck the Kuril islands.
The Japanese agency says the tsunami could be two meters or more, and had been expected to hit Japan's Pacific coast earlier this morning. Japanese weather officials are advising residents in the area to flee to higher ground. There have been no reports of tsunami waves so far. Warnings have also been issued for the Marcus, Wake and Midway Islands.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirms the earthquake as having a magnitude of eight-point-one. Officials say an earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive wave that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes of the quake.
