Chinanews, Beijing, August 2 - More and more expectant mothers in Beijing prefer Caesarean births to natural labors. Forty-five percent of expectant mothers in Beijing Hospital of Gynecology and Obstetrics choose Caesarean section, and the figure in some small hospitals is even as high as 60%, while WHO suggests that Caesarean birth rate should be controlled under 15%.
Many young couples today tend to have their babies late, as their jobs are very demanding, and the average age of expectant mothers is becoming older and older. Expectant mothers of older ages usually take a higher risk of dystocia, thus they and their family usually prefer Caesarean births. With the development of anesthesia, a Caesarean section can be totally painless, and it can be hours shorter than a natural labor, which is an additional advantage of surgical operation. Many expectant mothers also believe that the operation can help them to have a baby on a "good" day.
However, any operation will harm the body, and most expectant mothers forget that the pain that comes in the recovery of the operation usually lasts longer than the pain of natural labor and will very probably affect breast feeding. They also neglect possible infections in the operation. Furthermore, choosing surgical operation will deprive the babies of a chance of necessary physical exercise, which might cause disease because the babies can not get rid of all the amniotic fluid from their lungs. The operation can cause premature delivery, too, with so many expectant mothers eagerly choosing "good birthdays" for the arrival of their babies.
Generally, a Caesarean section costs 2,000 to 3,000 yuan more than a natural labor, and some hospitals persuade expectant mothers into choosing surgical operation just for profit. To doctors, an operation is much easier than round-the-clock monitoring, which is necessary in most cases of natural labor.
