原來，豹子最早的時候生活在一個大草原上。一眼望去，那個草原上幾乎全都是黃褐色的：沙土是黃褐色的，巖石是黃褐色的，野草是黃褐色的，就連長頸鹿、斑馬、羚羊等這些生活在草原上的動物們渾身上下也都是黃褐色的。但是，和草原顏色最相近的，還要數豹子。豹子身上的顏色和草原的顏色簡直是一模一樣，所以，當豹子在你面前的時候，如果你不仔細看，可能根本就不會發(fā)現。但是，豹子身上的這種顏色對于長頸鹿、斑馬和羚羊這些動物們來說真是太糟糕了，因為，豹子最喜歡吃這些動物了。它總是要悄悄地躲在黃褐色的大巖石或者草叢邊，當那些動物們從它身邊經過的時候，它就猛地撲出去，把它們吃掉。所以，草原上的動物非常怕豹子。
在這個草原上，還住著一個獵人，這個獵人渾身上下也是黃褐色的，而且，他身上的顏色和草原的顏色幾乎也是一模一樣的！這個獵人也像豹子一樣，經常要捕捉長頸鹿、斑馬和羚羊。只不過他是用弓箭，而豹子是用爪子和牙齒。
在這個草原上，幾乎每天都有一只動物要被豹子或者獵人捕殺，眼看著動物越來越少了。長頸鹿、羚羊、斑馬和其它動物們都非常著急，因為，誰也不知道下次被吃掉的會是誰。于是，長頸鹿召集動物們開了一次大會，商量怎么對付獵人和豹子。動物們從早上討論到下午，又從下午討論到晚上，整整討論了一天一夜，也沒有想出一個好辦法。最后，它們決定所有的動物一起離開這個草原，離豹子和獵人遠遠的，去一個他們從來沒有去過的地方。因為長頸鹿的腿最長，所以，動物們推選長頸鹿作為領路人，帶領它們離開草原。
在長頸鹿的帶領下，動物們扶老攜幼，浩浩蕩蕩地向前跑去。誰也不知道要去哪里，它們就是不停地跑呀跑，跑呀跑，整整跑了三天三夜，它們看見了一片大森林。
這個森林非常大，而且樹木茂盛，所以里面黑乎乎的，伸手不見五指。
“嗨！伙伴們，咱們就在這里住下了，你們看怎么樣？”長頸鹿回頭問大家。
斑馬跑到森林里看了一看，趕緊出來說：“天啊，里面太黑了，什么東西都看不見！太可怕了！”
羚羊也跑進去看了看，說：“是有點黑，可是，我們不是要找一個安全的地方嗎？里面這么黑，豹子和獵人就找不到我們了?！?BR> “大家覺得怎么樣？”長頸鹿又征求大家的意見。

沒有了獵人和豹子的威脅，動物們在這里過著無憂無慮的生活，日子非常快樂?？墒撬鼈円膊桓覐纳掷锍鰜?，因為怕獵人和豹子追過來。雖然森林里大部分地方都是黑漆漆的，但是，陽光偶爾也會透過樹葉的縫隙照進來。森林里有的地方能照到太陽，有的地方照不到太陽，所以，動物們的身上有的地方也就常常被太陽曬到，有的地方永遠都曬不到太陽。過了一段時間之后，長頸鹿深褐色的皮上長出了一大塊一大塊的斑點；斑馬淺褐色的皮上也出現了一道道的條紋；羚羊也變得灰不溜秋的，背上有一些彎彎曲曲的灰道道，看上去就像是一張樹皮。它們身上的顏色變得和整個森林的顏色非常像。所以，即使別人能聽得見它們說話的聲音，聞得到它們身上的氣味，也很難找到它們。
當豹子和獵人發(fā)現所有的動物都不見了的時候，他們非常生氣。于是，他們就不停地在草原上找來找去，發(fā)誓一定要把這些動物找回來，否則的話，他們就什么東西也不吃。當然，最后他們還是得抓一些老鼠呀、甲蟲呀什么的來填飽肚子。因為，在沒找到長頸鹿它們之前，他們就已經餓得受不了了。
一天，正當豹子和獵人肚子餓得咕咕叫的時候，他們遇到了一只大猩猩，這只大猩猩可是森林里最聰明的動物。
“嗨，大猩猩！你知道草原上的動物都跑到哪里去了嗎？”豹子問道。
雖然大猩猩知道那些動物都跑到森林里去了，但是，它覺得豹子太沒有禮貌了，所以它不搭理它。
這時，獵人又和大猩猩打招呼：“你好，大猩猩先生！你能告訴我那些草原上的動物都跑到什么地方去了嗎？”

于是，獵人只好再問了一遍：“尊敬的大猩猩先生，麻煩您能告訴我森林里的動物們都跑到哪里去了嗎？謝謝您！”
這下子大猩猩才懶洋洋地開了口，它說：“那些動物們都跑到另外一個地方去了，反正你們也找不到，我勸你們還是不要白費工夫了。”
“話是這么說，可是，自從它們走了之后，我們每天都茶飯不香，因為少了這么一群好伙伴，我們覺得很寂寞?！鲍C人假惺惺地說。
“哼，算了吧！我還不知道你們的心思。實話告訴你們吧，那些動物都跑到一個大森林里去了，就算你們找到那個森林，也未必能找得到它們?！贝笮尚烧f。
“為什么？”豹子覺得很奇怪。
“因為它們的生活環(huán)境變了，所以它們的樣子也發(fā)生了改變，也許長頸鹿變得不再像以前的長頸鹿，斑馬也變得不再像以前的斑馬了。”大猩猩說。
“哦？真有這么回事？我們倒想看看它們現在都變成了什么樣子。”獵人很感興趣地說。

可是，就像大猩猩說的那樣，那些動物們已經不是以前的那副樣子了。所以，盡管豹子和獵人在森林里轉悠了一天，到處尋找斑馬、長頸鹿和羚羊，但是，他們什么都沒有找到。雖然他們能聽得見它們的說話聲，能聞得見從它們身上散發(fā)出來的氣味，但是他們連它們的影子都沒找到。
到了該吃午飯的時間，豹子的肚子已經餓得咕咕叫了，它又氣又急地對獵人說：“看在老天的分上，咱們先休息一陣子吧，我已經筋疲力盡了。光天化日之下，咱們竟然連一只羚羊或者斑馬什么的都捉不到，這要是讓別人知道了肯定要嘲笑我們一輩子的。咱們還是等天黑以后再說吧?！?BR> 于是，他們就在森林里干坐著，等著天黑。好不容易天終于黑了，正在這個時候，豹子聽到了斑馬的呼吸聲，這個聲音就是從它的身后傳過來的！只見豹子猛一轉頭，朝著聲音傳來的地方就撲過去了?？墒?，這個東西聞起來像斑馬，摸起來像斑馬，蹬腿的樣子也像斑馬，但就是看不見它的樣子。豹子騎在它的腦袋上，說：“不許說話，你這個奇形怪狀的家伙！我要在你的腦袋上一直坐到天亮，我倒要看看你到底長得什么樣？到底是什么怪物？”

豹子問獵人：“嗨，你坐著的到底是什么東西？”

“我要變成黑褐色，這樣斑馬、長頸鹿它們就看不見我了?！鲍C人說。
“那我該怎么辦？我的皮膚要變成什么顏色呢？”豹子問道。
“你在身上弄一些條紋或者斑點，這樣看起來和長頸鹿或者和斑馬像一些?！鲍C人說。
“我才不愿意和斑馬一樣呢！它長得多難看啊。”豹子說。
“那你就弄斑點吧，這樣看上去更帥！”獵人說。
“唉……那好吧！你幫我弄上一些斑點吧。不過，你可千萬不要把斑點弄得太大了，那樣顯得太俗氣，我可不愿意長得和長頸鹿相像！”

于是，獵人先把自己全身上下全都涂上黑顏色，然后，把五個手指并在一起，把自己身上多余的黑顏色點在豹子的身上。所以，我們現在會發(fā)現豹子身上的斑點都是五個一堆，五個一堆的。在獵人為豹子點斑點的時候，有時指尖滑動了，所以，豹子身上的斑點也就有點模糊。
當豹子的身上有了斑點之后，它就在森林里住了下來，因為它又可以利用自己身體顏色的優(yōu)勢來抓動物了。
